Invincible Fighters to the Death

I'm playing as the turks and attempted to siege Constantinople which spawned the golden army (for lack of a better term.) I retreated, the golden army then laid siege to one of my towns (whichever one is directly east of Constantinople.)

All of that is fine.

My problem is that when I counter-attacked the army I defeated 99% of it, but then I'm left with units of 1 or 2 spearmen who are fighting to the death and are completely invincible. That might be the wrong word. They're totally frozen. My armies have them surrounded and they won't die. Some other units are routing and have the same problem, but if the To-The-Death fighters would route the battle would just auto-end.

This is obviously very frustrating. The only thing that I can think of for why this is happening is that I'm attacking the ERE's one full army with 3 full armies of my own, so maybe it can't handle that many troops? The battle works fine if I auto-resolve the battle, but when I auto-resolve I lose.

Well you could always use cheats to win the battle...

Sounds like you've run into ERE's elite royal guard spearman.

Don't completely surround them. They will also fight to death unless you leave an avenue for them to rout through.

These guys seem invincible because their defense is a staggering 23 I believe; and the fact that it is a "golden army" (full gold chevrons, upgraded armor and weapons etc.) will contribute even more to their seeming invincibility when fighting to the death.

yeah but when units are fighting to the death their attack is increased and defense is lowed not like it matters beacuase of poor scripting units dont actully fight to the death.
