    Default A note about Legionaries

While waiting for the enemy to attack I noticed that while most of my legionaries were standing at attention some of them were moving about freely as if I had put them at ease!

Being the guide on bearer in basic training I would get my intestines ripped out my for twitching even slightly at attention. I can only imagine what a Roman centurion would do to one of his legionaries.

My point is these animations are fine for militia and irregular troops but disciplined units like legionaries should stand at attention or some similar stance.

He wouldnt do anything to them. Common modern stances such as "at ease" or "at tension" didnt really exist back then.

I see, you have a point... there was a centurion called give-me-more (in latin) because he would whip his troops so hard to punish them that he kept on breaking the canes !

Actually his nick name was Get Another because he would discipline his Legionaries too the point of his cane would snap on their backs.

the point is that roman legionnaires were supposed to be disciplined. you just dont move around like that when your suppose to be standing still.

They're already a lot more disciplined than gallic warriors and greek militia.... They are one of a few troops back in 3rd BCE who can follow your orders to attack, form formations, and retreat....

Romans were never all perfect. I dont care how well trained you are when you have catapults and cavalry charging at you there is a tense of fear in that backbone.

This is the least of RTW's historical woes, when you consider screeching women, Roman ninjas and family system the vanilla Romans have. There is no point complaining about this in a non-mod forum in the first place, since vanilla will never change.

Hahaha, Scutarii I loved that one... he is right. Sarmaetians known incorrectly as Scythians is probably the biggest mistake.

It could be fixed by animations. But modern discipline would be too harsh for them - it's good enough that CA doesn't force you to watch their looting and pillage after battle

Do we even know anything about Roman (and other classical civs') views on formation and such? Would they have cared about whether or not guys are standing like statues or moving at ease? I mean, yeah, even in my JROTC squadron I could hear a couple guys being put in body bags by the Marines we were with, but when exactly did such exacting behavior requriements start?

By the time discipline and manoeuvres began to pop up on the battlefield. Manoeuvering around the battlefield in the exact way neccesary would require good discipline and instant reaction to orders. So it's likely that soldiers would have to be aware of their superiors at all times.
But I don't think that that meant they couldn't scratch their noses or move their arms.

If we are to believe rtw, the mad masses of the gauls and 'germans' can do that as well.
