Default [Fallout 3] "I wish I had known that..."

So, I got Fallout 3 a few days ago and I've yet to play it (had a 5 minute play about, but never started the game proper). Can anyone give me any hints or tips for a new player that will make my game experience better? Before anyone suggests it, I've already played Fallout and Fallout 2 (when they first got released).

By the way, please avoid spoilers!

Super Mutants are bad, so don't try to have a conservation with any of them.

As a teenager, I was taken to various houses and flats above takeaways in the north of England, to be beaten, tortured and raped over 100 times. I was called a “white slag” and “white ****” as they beat me.

*My favorite starting skills are small guns, repair and lockpick.
*I took the swift learner perks for the first 3 lvl upgrades. You gain extra exp points with them. After that take whatever you like.
*Search the cabinet in the overseers office before you leave. It contains 120 10mm rounds.
*After leaving vault 101 you should head down to the destroyed village. There is a blue mailbox left of the road. It contains 3 frag grenades.
*In a destroyed house in the village left of the road is a safe on the ground. It contains a 44 magnum.
*Go to Megaton. At the back of Megaton (outside the settlement) is a hollow rock surrounded by charred tree stumps. Inside it is a sniper rifle with some ammo.
*Make sure to use the repair skill often. You can use it to improve the quality of your weapons. With it you can use a piece of equipment (for example a gun) to improve the qualities of a same piece of equipment. Doing this instead of having your equipment fixed by a trader will save you a lot of money.
    * Don´t play the main quests too much. The main quest line is way too short and you cannot continue playing after having finished it. Go out and explore the wastelands instead.
*Don´t expect Fallout 3 to be like Fallout 1+2. You will only be disappointed if you do. It´s a different kind of RPG and a really good game in its own way.

Don't overstrech yourself, if out exploring the wastes, and your low on ammo and stims, get back to a city (using the fast travel) quick, as the autosave only works everytime you enter/exit a building its a loooooong time travel back the begging.

If your heading into DC, perpare yourself, its full of supermuties and other nasty stuff, so don't just wander in there, be ready to take them down.

Keep dogmeat alive, hes bloody useful.

    1. Ignore the red knight.

    2. Do not take the swift learner perks whatever you do! You only get 20 perks and you will reach level 20 before the end of the game either way, if you have swift learner you just wasted a perk that could have been used to get something that will remain useful after you hit the level cap.

    Ignore the red knight.
    That was *not* nice.
The first time I finished Fallout 3 I was at lvl 17.

Sorry Knighty, but I disagree with nearly all your points. And he asked for no spoilers (there are 120 10mm bullets in X is a spoiler)

I assumed that he meant no story spoilers. Which point(s) did you agree with BTW?

Don't push forward the storyline; Use repair; don't expect it to be FO1/2

Doing the main quest is hardly finishing. Especially since you can finish it at level 10.

Tag small guns, science or lockpick, the third you can choose freely imo.
Make Dogmeat essential if you don't want him to die against melee supermutants.

    Download mods.
Some day I'll actually write all the reviews I keep promising...

    So hard to choose but:
Take the Educated and Comprehension perks ASAP.
Make sure to take a high Intelligence (Already obvious since you've played f1 and f2)
Make sure to look for bobbleheads.
One of the best things to do is explore the Wasteland randomly. You don;t even need to be doing a quest.
Make sure to search the Dunwich building ALONE. You'll hate me for it, but it'll make the experience that much more awesome.
IMO, a companion kinda ruins the 'survival' aspect of the game, but if you feel yourself struggling, take one.
If you're making a 'sneak' character, don't take dogmeat.

Hmm... Never go somewhere without being prepared

-Always have the drugs like Rad Away, Rad-X, Med-X with you. Always search the bodies of defeaten enemies, you might find ammo, food, drugs, weapons etc.

    - Don't be afraid to eat/drink radioactive stuff. That is what the Rad Away is for, removing radio-activity.

-Save up Bottle caps. Search for them, the are often found on bodies of defeaten enemies.

-Don't forget that many actions you do, affect your karma. If you kill people, steal etc. You are more likely to get along with the criminal scum.

-As said, don't be afraid to explore the Wasteland. There is so much to be done and found, and once you are done with the campaign, its over buddy.

-As in investing in skills and perks, have in mind what type of character you want to be. Do you want to be skilled in meleé? Maybe good at sneaking? Or quite skilled with the big guns?

Good luck! Now all this writing about FO3 makes me wanna play it ALL over again

-Save the "Here and Now" perk for lvl 19

-I would recommend taking "Swift Learner" perks, most perks arnt that great. Especially because they're available at the very beginning when there are very few good perks.

-I dont know if it was in FO1-2, but a good way to evade becomeing overecumbered is to repair everything you pick up. (repair combines multiple items) Also, you dont need to carry every gun, In fact two is more than you need.

-Take it slow, the game is if you try to rush it.

    1. Invest at least two attack skills (small gun, big gun, energy weapon, unarm, melee).

    2. Invest at least three non-attack skills.

    3. For perk, pick something that is useful to your skills.

    4. Don't even bother to care skills you don't want to add.

    5. Use VATS to save your bullet.

    6. Try to get a buddy as soon as possible to save your stimpak.

Actually I would disagree, picking up guns is the best way to earn cash. Don't repair them, but give them to your pack mule, I mean companians, and don't be afraid to make multiple trips. I had over 5000 caps by lvl 11 doing this.

    Ah, that your right about.

Also, make sure anything you pick up is worth at least 10 caps for every pound. As you gain levels, push the cap limit a little bit higher everytime.

Don't try to "beat" the game(it's not possible), optimize your character, or get the best gear, it's a role playing game, and it's about having fun to play your character and do what suits you, not to get the best gear and do the most quests.

If you want to build an uber character, don't choose any perks that increase your skills (gun nut daddy's boy etc.) Nor do you need to start with a really high intelligence. Choose the conprehension and educated perks. When leveling up spread your skill point out evenly. Collect the bobblehead and skill books to get all your skills to 100.
