for the roman factions, there are 2 sets of units.
-the Pre Marian ones which are the ones you currently have (triarii, hestate, prencepe)
-the Post Marian ones (lc, praetorean, and urban cohorts)

so to get to the better types, you have to get to the Marian reforms. You get to Marian reforms by building an imperial palace in an Italian city (other than Rome)

Once the reforms have happened, you can't recruit or retrain any of the Pre-Marian units.

Would I be at a great advantage against other factions if I have the Marian reforms? I mean to say, is it something I should actively pursue in my campaign? Or will my triari, hastati, and principes fair well against the barbarian factions I'm currently at war with?
Sorry if this goes a little off topic. Just curious.

You can win without Post-Marian units but the reformed units are better overall.

I actually like to time the Marian reforms for a time of peace so I can train post-Marian troops and put my pre-Marian troops on garrison duty(since I can never retrain old troops).
