XGM (Extended Greek Mod) is an amazing Starter mod, is modfoldered and is simple to learn.

RS is cool but isn't modfoldered so you lose Vanilla.

AUP is still my favorite! It just adds units to Factions, doesn't change factions, cities, territories.

XGM is great but very intense! The AI makes huge armies and will attack with three or four every turn. Lots of action.
If you want something slower, try Rome Total Realism--though it takes out the gamey units like Egyptian chariots, Roman flaming pigs, German screaming women, etc. Gameplay focuses more on strategy than on winning lots and lots of battles. It's set in the same time period as vanilla, but the factions are quite altered.

And if you want intense, I suggest SPQR. XGM is a toddler that has just fallen off it's first tricycle, compared to SPQR which is a pimp cruising in it's gangsta-car.
But the above-mentioned mods are probably better, since they are more like vanilla. Though most people play mods to get away from vanilla.
