It's insane... Kinda felt this coming since last new year. I've saved up 2 year-salaries to go to Florida to become an aviator, but with uncertainties coming ahead, even if school stays alive, I guess getting an aviator job as early as 2011 would be kinda slim. People with no money don't travel as much, or send as much goods by plane. Time will tell.

I would save the cash even though once USA is removed from reserve currency the dollar will fall bad. Basically like germany after WW1 you may need a barrel of it to buy food. I read the attached article with much interest, my observations would be an economist/ journalist with alot of negative thoughts, with alot of assumptions. He seemed to offer nothing with any positives and wished to view the present situation blackly. Obviously as you and the previous replier have both said that time will tell.

As for me I play the TW games and your mod to get away from the real world and too have fun and not to worry about events I can have little control over.

When I was teenager in the late seventies and eighties I was constantly worried about the West and East going to war and a Nuclear holocaust. Time moved on and this situation has now changed and will do so again.

The troops being released from Iraq will be used to re-inforce Afghanistan to continue the war against terror. It will be a long war as no modern army as ever won in this country as it is a battle of hearts and minds.

Your getting the 2 confused, as for dark outlook there are MANY more articles with more evidence of whats going on, do a search. Dont rely on others to give them to you, you can miss things that way. Basically the Banks are ripping us off big time, and congress not understands this and are having trouble trying to fix it because the bill they signed gave the Banks FULL authority without monitoring. I read the bill they signed, alot of them only skimmed the surface amd missed some paragraphs that give the banks a free hand, hence why they are giving bonuses to Goldman Sachs employees etc.

The author of the article in the OP has predicted that Oil prices will "reach new highs" by the end of this year. Given that we are now a week before that, I can call this the most ridiculous prognostication of 2008. Weigand ignored demand (that is now at the 1999 levels). I wonder where are the data supporting his "doom is on your doorstep" editorial and what he did ignore this time.

I don't say that I am optimistic for the outlook of the world economy but I need something more than prophetic pronouncements to be convinced.

Nice article except it is all coming from a metals trader at a metals site no less. It lines his pocket and the sites by over hyping bad news. when the economy goes down people choose to move to metals. This guy is obviously playing to the people coming to the site already looking for more gloom and doom info to help them make their decision to by metals. I had never even heard of kitco.com before this. Have you seen all of the commercials about buying gold and silver popping up since things got a little dicey.
Nice jab at Fox news even though independent groups have determined they are far more balanced than other networks. I guess you could have just said "The News" is giving a lot of bad hype and I would have agreed with you. Divine, Garb, The economy is going down. There are MANY other sources besides Kitco. BLOOMBERG being one, and to be honest just read the history of how the depression started in the market and what’s happen now. We are seeing the same erratic behavior never before seen like this. Its the cooked frog syndrome, if this was doing this 2 years ago people would have panic, and the crash would have happened then. Our economy is more complex today so it’s harder to relate to a crash of some sort. But I serious believe one will happen after which there is talk about combining North America and making an AMERO, which you can see the picture of the proposed look, which will compete with the Euro etc.

So I think this isn’t a shock to some who know the markets and run the main central banks. They would know way ahead of time that what they are doing will eventually cause a systemic crash. Don’t feel too bad for the US, the rest of the world will suffer their own also.

I am more concerned about unworthy people using the crash to their advantage to start wars, similar tactic Hitler used after the depression.

Anyway here is another link that mainly talks about the Facts of the markets which some opinion. If people want some other sources search Bloomberg and other sites and see their comments. Just because the site sells gold doesn’t mean their facts are always wrong.

Here is an article from Bloomberg speaking on Deflation that is happening, now what’s important about this is it will have a UTURN effect for about 3-4 months commodities etc will deflate, basically getting cheaper, then once the banks start to lend again, which they have to in order to make profit, inflation will kick in, which will be very bad. So you can see there is more to worry about then just what a Gold broker might say. Pretty much anyone thinking all is going to be ok, is delusional or paid to say so.

I read the article. Gotta say, I do not really know what to expect. On one hand, since we have no Euro, US Dollar or GB Pound, so far we are somehow safe, but as anywhere in the world, economics are falling, currently I think it is somewhere 15-25% down. Which is not good obviously, but since I am optimistic guy, I hope everything will be solved soon enough for us all to live in peace.
I like gas prices about this crisis. Gas here dropped nearly 30% down, which is pretty wonderful, considering how expensive it is here

Is it going to be rough yeah I dont disagree, are we going to have civil war 2 not hardly. I dont think all of the government spending is the answer either but that is just my opinion. Other opinions would be that Unemployment will stay below 10% and we will be on the sunny side by 2010. The stock market cannot crash they have measures against that.

As we all know statistics can be construed to put anything in a more favorable light so unless you know how those statistics were gathered then well.....

I am sure you will find lots of articles of gloom on bloomberg, it is the journalist soup du jour currently. Gloom and doom and disaster and blood all gets more attention that is how the media works. throughout this article you never read a "but" statement such as but if the gov does such and such it will be Ok. There are many optomistic types of articles out there as well. Govt is not going to sit idly by they must look like they are doing something. I think they will make it worse personally but the fact that no economist can see into the future or what they govt is going to do makes this all still speculation. If you want to know how speculation turns out ask an oil trader pretty sure a few of them got burned recently. I dont know about you but when i was in college the brainiacs werent in the college of Journalism, that is where we went for dumb hot chicks.

Right lets break these reasons down for you.
1. Not looking for a job
Well if you are retired, on the Government dole even though you could work, or disabled. Then you are really not part of the workforce so there for you cant be unemployed from said workforce.
2. no longer taking the benefits.
again you probably left the workforce possibly for one of the reasons above. I think it is possible to have these benefits extended if you prove you are still looking for a job. So again you have left the workforce.
So the 17% number you pulled out of the air while may be valid for all people that of the age to work are not necessarily part of the workforce.

You'll have to find other articles on the American Union as allot of them are older now and there isn’t much heard of late about it.

Sounds like your hell bent not to believe that some very rich and powerful people out there might want to make a central government to their own advantage (something that has been a problem throughout history). All it takes is some research and true you cant believe all you read or hear, but you can view the documents and watch the weird behavior with the Banking system, and in Politics of late to see something is seriously wrong and should give warning bells.

I wouldn’t have believed allot of this stuff myself, and I still don’t believe everything out there, but there is ENOUGH out there to cause for concern, and there will be a point IF there is a plan to combine us with Canada and Mexico that it will be so obvious that even your common Joe will see it. There are MANY people in High up Banking and Politics that Believe in One world Government, just like allot of people believe in Communism, Fascism, or Democracy. The problem is it seems a Large number of those in Charge were students in college of people who Believe in a 1 world government and no more nations, and if you wanted something like that it would take time and effort, because most wouldn’t want that. These Unions that exist and yet were told don’t seems a logical first step toward centralizing the power structure, then later years down the line you can centralize some more, until really there is only one power base, similar to corporations which IMO seems to be more of the Government than what it used to be. Large majorities seem to also be former Corporate CEOs or Bank CEOs. Coincidence?

Time will tell, and I don’t think it’s the end of the world, but I do think we are in for some hard times because there are always people out there that feel centralized world government is the only hope. I just don’t agree with that thinking and I would hope others feel the same way.

I dislike the idea of corporations running us more than a centralized democratical government.
I don't believe the world is ready for this within a few hundreds of years though, but as you say, babysteps in that direction.
