    The formation is not the only thing to affect your losses tho. The test proves that using the shieldwall against melee enemy infantry can help you by what - 25% losses saved? But with your ugprades, experience, general and more units in the battle, you will more likely save more men. Of course if enemy will push on one side with lots of heavy troops, you will suffer greatly, but still better to lose half of a single unit then half of an army

    Well... I was about 15 turns into my first v7.0 campaign when I decided to try Hesus guide for the LoLz. It proved to be better than my own start, so I didn't see any reason not to keep it going

    My version of Carthage decided to break Hesus' rules. I placed my armies just so, and Hannibal went straight for Reghion anyway. Plan went to hell in a handbasket real quick.

    The guide is really great for pointing out some of the economic things that one might not think of (especially coming from Vanilla or another mod)

    Also, it was good to see somebody endorse abandoning a city (Messana) as a strategic move. I've always considered doing that, but it felt like it was "wrong" somehow. Now I know it's just smart sometimes!

    indeed your right my come back was alot of fun and i'm glad i stuck with it - i only managed it with yours and hesus' help though those elephants were murdering me

    your right with the pointer's with the economy the hardest thing about the start in my opinion is the economy - you don't have the money to cover your mistakes like you would in other games

    and hey there's many examples of real countries (both modern and ancient) abandoning cities etc, take rome leaving britan as a great example

    That was one of the option that could happen but i had to stick with one guideline. If Hannibal would go to Reghion you should have moved Quintus to Taretum and Hannibal would have come back to protect Reghion.

    Almost. I believe I moved Quintus south to "harass" Hannibal, and he turned on me. I kicked his booty.

    Then Theophanes pounced on Flavius, which didn't go well for him, with that rabble army and Flavius' command bonus. That was another thing I wasn't used to taking into account. I relied so heavily on brute force in Vanilla that a general's experience never told that heavily.

    Here...different story.

    The start is pain but fun. Once you clear this Hannibal nuisance, way is open and then it begins! the constant gallic advance. Although I know how to stop them now.
