    Default Stuck in sally battle

Got myself in a strange situation just now.

I started a siege with my cav-only army, expecting my infantry force to catch up in a few turns as I prepare the siege engines. But before the infantry arrived, the defenders sally forth to meet me in battle. I utterly destroyed them right in front of their gate, but a few of the stragglers managed to make it back to the town center.

Now the problem is that, without infantry or siege equipment, I'm stuck outside the wall. The handful of enemy inside keeps charging out, only to rout a few steps away from the town center. So now I'm left to waiting it out on x6 speed. But for some reason the battle hasn't ended even though the timer is finished (I don't have unlimited time option on).

Anyway just wondering if anyone has had this experience, and any suggestion on how to deal with this. Oh and if you're wondering, the battle is still running in the background. It was a brilliant battle where I crushed a numerically superior foe, so I'd really hate to have to quit out...

    That seems glitchtacular.

The only thing I can suggest is to try to enter all the gates.

If none open, then retreat to the furthest corner of the map, hoping that the enemy force will have enough morale to sally again.

If that doesn't work, remove units one by one from the battlefield until the AI stops routing. If you're down to your last unit at the furthest corner of the map and the AI keeps routing back to centre, then I don't know what to tell you.

Can I ask a silly question please ? How can you forward the battle in x6 speed ? I thought x3 is the maximum speed.

Since patch 1.2 3 x speed has been replaced by 6 x speed.

@Uly: Retreat your general to a far corner of the map. This will hopefully lead to a more confident enemy and they will march to you. If all units rout simultaneously then the battle will be over.

Officer to a soldier who refuses to fight: There three types of soldiers who don't have to fight. They are called KIA, MIA and POW and you are not one of them.

    Tosa will be missed.

That seems like a good idea, except I've already withdrawn all troops except my general. On hindsight that might not have been the best troop to leave behind (what with his +5 dread). In fact I wonder if that's what routing the enemy constantly. Granted the only enemy left are some militia and crossbowmen (possibly out of ammo).

x6 speed? I don't know, I just have it. Press the time compress button, I think it was default to Ctrl-T or something. I've had it changed.

When they come out to attack, be near the gate, and when they open the gate to sally again order every unit you have to run directly towards the town center.

I do this with at least one unit during every sally like that. Works every time. They capture the gate and go through easily.

I finally bit the bullet and quit out... it was a weird situation, though. I tried something similar to what you suggested, but none had any effect.

To be more precise, there was about a handful of groups left: 3 crossbowmen, 2 militia and 1 peasants; each with 1 to 4 troops remaining. What would happen was that they'd retreat to the town centre, regroup, and charge out. But as soon as they're about maybe 10 or 20 paces away from the centre, they'd automatically chicken out and rout. This they took turn doing ad infinitum. Strange but it would seem that they never all routed at the same time.

Anyway I came to the conclusion that my general was probably too dreadful for his own good. It was probably a factor how I was able to beat this overwhelming force: I was able to keep spliting and routing them piece-meal.

That's why I started to play my campaigns with time limit for battles. It happened to me several times, for example I have been attacked in open field and the enemy didn't move, or being sieged, the enemy enter my settlement but didn't have the strengh to finish me, so they keep coming from the gates to the center in small groups forever. Time limit put the responsability on the attacker.

Time limit doesnt seem to work with me, for an unknown reason...

There is this box: [ ] No time limit.

If I want NO time limit, do I tick it or not? Tried either one but neither worked.

if you tick the box, battles go on for ever unless one side withdraws

If you cheque the box than yes, there will be no time limit, which can be very very troublesome in situations, I fI where you I wouldnt ever check it lol
