Give this a try:
Go to your RTW shortcut, and right click, then click on Properties. Find the line called "Target" and add " -show_err" to the end of the line (without the speech marks). Make sure that you add the space in between the end of the line and the hyphen in -show_err. Click Apply, then OK. Now play again, and when it freezes, quit out of the game, and see if there is a small pop-up that tells you if there is an error in some text file. Note down what it is and ask here again.
If that doesn't work, you might like to go try the Technical forum for more advice.

If the show_err doesn't give you anything useful, it could be a video error that happens occasionally when you few in-game movies, like a faction death, wonder captured, or the senate standings (when playing a roman faction that is). I think I fixed it by reinstalling the Windows Media Player codecs or something like that when you first install the game.

hmm...i just did it again to see what would happen, without the show err, and it said it was a microsoft c+++ virtual runtime error.

(I'm assuming you are running windows XP)
Run the windows update application (start-> control panel -> Automatic updates). This will show a list of available updates. Look for one called C+++ runtime library or something similar.
Restart your computer, then try to play RTW again.

I get this crash aswell! Really annoying, as I'm naturally about to complete my campaign :/
Has anyone found a fix for this?
