    See the Image Here!

"One peek into a small part of the sky, one giant leap back in time. The Hubble telescope has provided mankind's deepest, most detailed visible view of the universe.
Representing a narrow "keyhole" view stretching to the visible horizon of the universe, the Hubble Deep Field image covers a speck of the sky only about the width of a dime 75 feet away. Though the field is a very small sample of the heavens, it is considered representative of the typical distribution of galaxies in space, because the universe, statistically, looks largely the same in all directions. Gazing into this small field, Hubble uncovered a bewildering assortment of at least 1,500galaxies at various stages of evolution."

I seen this before, its truly marvelous thing. In shows how small and insignificant we really are.

I recently had privileges of seeing some photos done by Spitzer space telescope of Omega Centauri globular cluster and it was one of most amazing things I have ever seen.

For anybody beginners who would like to understand more about space, black/white holes, supernovas and all other marvelous things out there watch History Channel Space series (now in 3rd season0

The sheer size of the universe is ridiculous.

I'm surprised nobody made a thread about it already, this picture wasn't taken that long ago, just last month.

It is both beatiful and moving at the same time...

unless it's a new one, im pretty sure the deep field pic is at least 5-10 years old. Not to belittle it though, it's truly incredible.

Yes I stand corrected but then Why was there so much hype about it and people saying the picture was released this year? Weird, well I think It's still a nice picture and it seems not that many people have seen it so....

Please correct me if I'm wrong but weren't they going to launch a new space telescope which has about a hundred times the imaging/observing quality as Hubble. :hmmm:

btw: The deep field contains about 10,000 galaxies, all of these galaxies are found on a tiny patch of sky the size of 1/10 the diameter of a full moon, equal to roughly one thirteen-millionth of the total area of the sky

@Mofo: It's not 5-10 years old, its a month old pic.

    @Spere: Really? Which one?

again, awesome pic. I, too, have it as my background now. But it's from 1996.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:HD...y_galaxies.jpg

    EDIT: 1995 actually

The Hubble Deep Field (HDF) is an image of a small region in the constellationUrsa Major, based on the results of a series of observations by the Hubble Space Telescope. It covers an area 2.5 arcminutes across, equivalent in angular size to a tennis ball (about 65mm) at a distance of 100 metres, and a two-millionth of our sky. The image was assembled from 342 separate exposures taken with the Space Telescope's Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 over ten consecutive days between December 18 and December 28, 1995.

woe to the universe if ever mankind spreads its seed in the stars.

Given humanity has no method of travelling to any other planet we have no idea what habits will change once such technology is formed. You are basing your assumption on current society which has no ability to travel to a survivable planet in a reasonable amount of time(read: less than 6 months).

No... no I'm not. Are the same problems that beset humanity now the same as the ones of, say, 2000 years ago? I think so, fundamentally.
