Default I feel sorry for Christians...

Christmas! We all know what Christmas is. Or do we?

I feel sorry for Christians when they see Atheists apparently 'celebrating Christmas'. Why do atheists even celebrate it? So they can get free presents and get time off work and school?

Christmas is celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. But the modern world of the west has turned it into some sort of marketing scheme. Imagine how it must feel as a Christian to see your special celebration being diminished into commercialism.

If you're not Christian, don't celebrate Christmas.

    Thanks.

I'll do whatever I want as long it's legal, thank you very much.

Also how do you think the worshippers of Sol Invictus feel? Or those celebrating Yule?
Some day I'll actually write all the reviews I keep promising...

Well for starters Sol Invictus was stolen from the Greeks by the Romans. And Yule is a Pagan worship. Pagan's are the enemy of Islam.

Haha. You do realise that Christmas is full of references to Yule and other pagan festivities? You realise that Christmas is celebrated at the time of year it is because it was easier to swallow for pagan converts and that Jesus was actually born in September?

Funnily enough, no I don't realise.

But what I do realise is that atheists treat Christians like second class citizens. They think that Christians are intellectually inferior to them, because apparently they're "stupid" enough to actually believe in God and Jesus.

Yeah I must have forgotten that atheists outnumber Christians immensely all over the west.................. The majority population cannot be treated like second class citizens.

True, a lot of atheist pride themselves on being intellectually superior, but I do not think they see Christians as second class. Most atheist I know are treated as second class by Christians, and they just want to be equal with them.

It may carry references but the purpose is to remember Jesus Christ. it does not matter if He was born in september. If it was not for Christ we wouldnt celebrate Christmas.

Funny what you call Christmas I just have a get together for. It is the same thing, you just happen to have a different reason for it. You seem to forget once again that this particular festival is MUCH older than Christianity. So call it what you want, I will call it what I want, and we can just share the day since it is the one officially recognised by the gov.

Generally I don't read the whole thread. I just read enough to where i can't help but automatically facepalm myself and then quite. This statement is such one.

Christmas was placed on the date it was simply to keep Christians from going to pagan festivals which were considered amoral. Sacrificing to pagan gods, drunken orgy and all that jazz. I don't think any Christians from any denomination claims that Dec 25 is when Christ was born. And as an Orthodox Christian I have this to add, it's really irrelevant that we don't know. To us Christmas isn't this huge holiday they make it out to be in the mall. Pascha is actually bigger.

Just my two cents in concerning all the people going "lulz xmas is pagan holiday har har har"

Yeah, so? It ain't about Islam here, is it now?

Besides the tradition of celebrating solstice is far older than any modern religion. Just think of atheists as looking for a reason to gather and feast with loved ones, and we've taken solstice because of tradition and because festive food is readily available in that period (and cheaper).

If Christians want to have their own time of year for it then they are free to celebrate Jesus' birth whenever they want. The Winter Holiday be it Yule, Saturnalia, solstice fests, Channukah, Christmas, etc is a TRADITION that goes back LONG before Christianity.

    Yes, what's wrong with that?

Christmas doesn't have much religious conext anymore, and became a national (?) American and European seculer holidays.

Exactly, and that's why I feel sorry for Christians. What was the point in Jesus sacrificing himself for humanity if this is how we remember Christmas?!

Welcome to the west. Contrary to popular belief the market controls our lives and culture, not anything else. Take Halloween for example...and it's emergence in England as a national cultural thing.

Nah. But people still take a day-off and celebrate both, Christmas and New Year's Eve. And here, in Jerusalem, you have quite a lot of Christians, so...

I am a follower of Asatru, but I celebrate Christmas because it is a time for the family to get together. I get to see people I do not see for the rest of the year.

Well hellooooo. They're the ones who believe in 2000 year old fairytale. What do you expect?
I have approximate answers and possible beliefs, and different degrees of certainty about different things, but I’m not absolutely sure of anything, and many things I don’t know anything about. But I don’t have to know an answer. I don’t feel frightened by not knowing.
