Yes, but they only did so under torture. Not surprisingly, their descriptions of this "Baphomet" all differed widely - from a brass head, to an image painted on a board to a cat. It's clear they were simply telling their interrogators what they wanted to hear and just made up the details simply to make the pain stop.

All of them repudiated their "confessions" later, which is why they were among the French Templars who were executed. It would be pretty silly to think there was any kind of truth to their confessions. The similarity between the word "Baphomet" and the name "Mohammed" is pretty clear as well.

I'm pretty sure this sums up everything you need to know about Baphomet. Just a way for the Templars to stop the torture they were going through.
Thank you for reading this assuredly fantastic post.

    For God's sake ...

That chapel has nothing to do with the Templars. The Sinclair family who built the chapel actually testified against the Templars when the Order was put on trial in Edinburgh in 1309. The myth that this chapel is somehow connected to the Templars and/or some vast occult mystery seems to be one of those crap ideas that simply won't die.

It would make perfect sense. Popular medieval conceptions about Islam were garbled and confused and popular literature such as chansons de geste depicted Muslims as idolators who worshipped Apollo and their god "Mahound" or "Baphomet" - clearly corruptions of the name "Mohammed". So it makes perfect sense for rumours to arise that the Templars had taken up wicked Islamic idolatry while in the Middle East and were worshippers of the Muslim idol "Baphomet".

It has something to do with the Templars, because he saw it on tv. On National Geographic. Which isn't a pseudo-scientific channel that only broadcasts wacky documentaries on religious conspiracy theories.

Well, maybe they were in the conspiracy and they agreed that the Templars had to be sacrificed for the secret to remain...well, secret.

(I am joking obviously. After all, conspirasy freaks will twist any fact to fit their predetermined view. Them and religious freaks.)
