Default Media Consolidation: what exactly is good about it?

Watching Bill Moyers, I saw his piece here about the FCC in America, and thought it could be brought up here. What exactly is good about stringing together the voices of the nation into the hands of a few, often partisan, corporate owners?

So we only hear one thing!!! Why have fair, balanced news? I mean, it only allows competency and competition. We dont' need that. Hearing unbiased reporting? Over-rated.
I'd rather just sit at home and have Big Brother tell me everything I need to know.

Hmm, when you factor in the internets, media ownership percentages drop to nothingness. The FCC media ownership rules are irrelevant.

Agreed. CNN and the other talking heads have pretty much yakked themselves into oblivion. Declining ratings and falling newspaper subscriptions heralds the birth of net news and satellite radio (a much needed changing of the guard).

As for bias, I don't know where you have been sleeping, but CNN hasn't been objective since 1992. Don't know much about Foxnews because I rarely ever see it on (I don't turn on the news in my home). I read about a half dozens netzines and newsgroups for my daily's. I haven't paid attention to a newspaper in over 10 years (except for The Onion).

I'm waiting for the day when the internet annihilates the last vestiges of television from the world. So long as net nuetrality is maintained, media consolidation means very little to me. Honestly, I'd rather if we all just turned of our televisions. I'd be willing to bet we'd be more productive and happier citizens.

I would be more concerned with bandwidth/frequency allocations with respect to the FCC than media conglomerates. FCC is a dinosaur and should be dissolved.
To be governed is to be watched, inspected, directed, numbered, regulated, enrolled, indoctrinated, controlled, checked, estimated, valued, censured, and commanded, by creatures who have neither the right, wisdom, nor virtue to do so. To be governed is to be at every operation, at every transaction noted, registered, taxed, measured, numbered, assessed, licensed, admonished, reformed, corrected, and punished. It is, under pretext of public utility, and in the name of the general interest, to be placed under contribution, drilled, fleeced, exploited, monopolized, extorted, and robbed; then, at the slightest resistance, to be repressed, fined, vilified, harassed, abused, disarmed, choked, imprisoned, judged, condemned, shot, deported, sacrificed, sold, and betrayed; and to crown all, mocked, ridiculed, derided, outraged, and dishonored. -Pierre-Joseph Proudhon

I could make the argument that the FCC ownership rules may need amendment, but that they are still serving a real purpose. Examine the reporters on staff with various news organizations. As these organizations consolidate -- there will be less research and diversity of research into the news. If you are only concerned about putting mikes in front of politicians that call "news conferences", your point would be more valid. As to the ownership restrictions on broadcast radio that just puts out syndicated talk radio -- again a valid point.

I think the focus should be on the news gathering aspects of the industry and less on the outlet structure.

btw -- The internet is not a replacement since it relies nearly completely on the reported news of other media.

The bulk of the reporters are working for the print media and this is where the consolidation is most pronounced. Printed media is giving too much away with the internet sites and a new model is needed before they all go bust. I do not have a solution for the consolidation process, but I do not like the loss of reporters in the trenches.

That makes it doubly important of course to keep the Internet free.

Regardless, television and print news makes the bulk still of media.
