    Default Strange Crusade

I was playnig my Egypt Campaign the other day, and the Pope called a Crusade on my best money-making city, Antioch. Normally, I wouldn't care, but I'm allies with the Pope. We both have military access, trade rights, and we had "Amiable" relations. (We now have abysmal relations.)

Is this normal? Or is just a glitch?

I've been allies with the Pope since like the 12th turn, and he called the Crusade on turn 109. Its now turn 129, I'm at war with every Catholic Faction (they delcared war on me immediatley after the Crusade was called). Antioch fell to two full stacks of Danish Crusading armies, though I was able to recapture it in a few turns.

    So, is this normal?

    Please answer .

I'm talking from the game's perspective, don't drag the real world into this.

Well, it IS like this in the game... I hate those italian ...ers, especially Milan.

There might have been some cursades or jihads called against me but what happens in absolute every game is that one of the italian factions betrays me. Sometimes they don't even attack me, they just blockade a port for one turn and then sail off again... annoying little bastards.

It's not a bug or something it's just a good example of Pope doing diplomacy his style. I was once playing as England, went to the Holy Land and took Gaza and then presented it to the Pope as a present. Only 6 turns later he excommunicated me!!??..
I was shocked, and little bit later it was Crusade that was called against me.
    Just playing diplomacy Papal style.

oh.....ok then. I thought it was like a glitch or something....then I guess it was pointless to gift Jerusalem to the Pope. Oh well, I'm gonna go take that city back then and see if I can call a Jihad on Rome....hehehe

I actually played the Egyptians because I wanted to defend against crusades. Had a lot of fun defending the city time after time. Of the 6 crusades, only 4 made it because my Mamluk Archers stack destroyed two of them. The other four died at the wall.

As the egyptians, have two naffutans unit during siege. 20 of them can easily kill 200-300 men from the flanks at the breached gate.

You should enjoy the crusade. Most factions don't get the chance to defend so bravely.

in vanilla the crusade targets are fairly set in stone a believe. if on turn x settlement y is the target, basically its gonna be called, unless the faction that owns it is a non-excommunicated catholic.

The pope acting strange is quite common:

I was playing England and Milan captured Rome. The pope called a crusade and after I captured Rome asked to hand it back to him. The next turn Milan captured Rome after which the pope called a crusade. I captured Rome and gave it back to him. The pope lost Rome the next turn to Milan ........ etc. I guess you can fill in the blanks by now. I was his favorite by now.

I have also been a victim of his diplomacy. While playing the Turks and having an excellent relation and an alliance with him he called a crusade against my capital. Nice ally
Officer to a soldier who refuses to fight: There three types of soldiers who don't have to fight. They are called KIA, MIA and POW and you are not one of them.

    Tosa will be missed.

lol good then I'm not the only one. Well, I called a Jihad on Rome and sent three full stacks, all of which on ships, and they all were killed by pirates when the odds were 3:1 in my favor . Oh well, I'll just send a few more up through constantinople and march there....then burn Rome to the ground!!!!!!!!!!

The only exception to this rule is if the Catholic faction (you or AI) is excommunicated.

Wouldn't I be funny if there was a simultaneous Crusade and Jihad on the same city belonging to an excommunicated faction?

And then to top it off, the Russians conquer it?
