    Why pay?

    Avast!
    AVG
    Spybot Search and Destroy
    Ad-Aware

If these don't work, then it must be one serious virus...

I use AVG but all the above are great free programs!

For a complete online scan and removal try this:

    http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

This removes: Virus, mailware, spyware and trojans. good all-rounder!

I second each and every one of Roman's suggestions. I personally have used Avast! Antivirus for years - it runs all the time (without slowing your computer down much) and has a nice warning pop up if it ever detects a virus. It's saved me countless time when some malware was trying to get on my computer - it even can play a little audio message ("Warning! A virus has been detected!") and pauses that connection, so you have time to think about what to do.

AVG's interface doesn't make it as usable, but that's just my opinion. Also, I've been using Avast for a while, so I'm used to that. It's worth noting that AVG is generally ranked higher than Avast, and last time I checked it was the only free antivirus program recommended by Microsoft.

Ad-Aware is not technically an antivirus program, but it is a great anti-spyware program.

If you choose Avast, try what's called a "Boot time scan" which it will ask you the first time you install it. It will restart your computer and do an extremely thorough scan before a virus has the chance to hide itself somehow.

Try a "legal" copy of Norton Internet Security 2009 and some trial-remover ... it is the first Norton I encountered who didn't slow down my performance... I hated Norton my whole life lol but now could not do it without it...

I don't think this will remove XPantivirus M8, that's one of the most difficult spyware programs I have ever had to remove. I posted a link on your thread... I suggest you read it.

The New Free AVG is pretty good, I back up Roman on this one.

Eset smart security is a very good package, good detection, fast scanning time, dosen't hog resources and active scanning on downloaded files also contains a pretty good firewall in the bundle. I can't check if it falls into your price bracket as it redirects me to the uk purchase website. The antivirus package alone called Eset NOD32 antivirus is good on it's own as well.
