    Default A request ......about dacians

You made great job with EB for Rome . Keep the good work and EB2 will be known to all medieval 2 fans all over the world .
My request would be if it's possible so that Getai would be named Dacia as I truly believe is a better name .
And another thing would be that you don't represent every resource on the map so we would have a smooth and a very pleasant map (like a "painting").

    I thank you .

Dacia was the name given to the region by the Romans. The Getai were a powerful Thraicio-Dacian group. Including a faction called "Dacia" would be almost as bad as including a faction called "Spain".

Resources in EB1 are represented as little towns, forests, fishing villages. EB2 will probably have similar. Some people don't like it, but it has a better feel to it than having a giant block of iron or so-forth.

As a Romanian, and therefore someone who has Dacians among his forefathers, and someone interested in his own people's history, I think that you are wrong, MAA. Of course, sources about Dacia are rather limited, given the fact that my ancestors rarely wrote and very little is preserved, but... Dacia was not a part of the Getai. My ancestors were called Daci by the Romans and Geti by the Greeks. Dacii or the Geti/Getai would really be the same thing.

However, I don't necessarily agree with an_do_89. Why would it be a better name? To me, it seems that the EB team has used a lot of Greek words rather than the latin ones, so using the Greek name for Dacia rather than the Latin one would make sense. (Then again, it has been argued that Daos meant wolf in the language of the Dacians/Getai, so maybe the Latin name had a reasoning behind it)

No, they spoke their own language, Thracian. However, the Thracian language is mostly lost (about 200 words survive, not enough to reconstruct it with any degree of certainty), so the team used Greek names when they could not find Thracian ones.

No, he is not saying the Dacians are part of the Getai, but that the Getai are a Dacian tribe. EB's Getai do not represent entire Dacia, so they shouldn't be called as such.

A new mobile phone tower went up in a town in the USA, and the local newspaper asked a number of people what they thought of it. Some said they noticed their cellphone reception was better. Some said they noticed the tower was affecting their health.

A local administrator was asked to comment. He nodded sagely, and said simply: "Wow. And think about how much more pronounced these effects will be once the tower is actually operational."

well... it depends. In the Romanian school we usually employ the Latin term, so for Romanians, Dacia/dacii is a lot more frequent than Geta/Getai. I can't form an opinion on which is the most frequently used term outside of Romania though. Dacia makes more sense from an ethymology point of view, as Daoi would mean Wolves, and the wolf was an important symbol for the Daci/Geti. But on the other hand, as far as I have thought, most terms in Europa Barbarorum are, or at least seem to be Greek, so if we are to follow what I think is the EB tradition, the Getai would make more sense.

Dio Cassius names the dacians to the left of Danube river as Dacos "as this is how they call themselves and the romans knowing that some of the greeks call them getae as they deserve or as they don't deserve ...."
    but
Strabon is the one who makes a semnificative and interesting statement :

"there exists also another division of the country, from old times : some of them are dacians and other getai (geti) , getai are those from the sea , from the east and dacians are those from the opposite side towards Germany and the Danube springs......, the upper part of the river from springs to the cataract(IRON GATES IN TODAY ROMANIA) is named Danubius flowing mostly between dacians and the lower part of the river till the sea flows between getai and is name Istru "

As we see dacians called themselves dacians after dio cassius and inhabited a large part of the settlements near the danube river . It is also known that under king Burebista the borders of the empire were huge and even rome feared the dacians , which united under one banner all the tribes . here is the map of the empire , i also see there is a movie on the page in english for who is interested :http://209.85.129.132/search?q=cache...lnk&cd=2&gl=ro

After watching that video, it is clear at least that the references to Rome are unresearched. The author of the video claimed that Caesar killed Pompey in Egypt, when this simply isn't so. The Egyptians murdered Pompey before Caesar got there, and it is documented that Caesar wept when he learnt that the Egyptians had beheaded Pompey. It also claimed that Caesar was planning to invade Dacia at the time he was assassinated. Everything I have read points to a planned invasion of Parthia. If the Roman portion of that video is lacking in credibility, it makes me question the credibility of the rest of the site, and all its claims about Dacia (not that I could read the site itself, but at least the video). I'll need more definitive answers. I can't speak for the EB team, but I can say that, based on what I know of them, they probably aren't going to change their minds based solely on this video.

No, IIRC there is a bit of uncertainty whether he would attack the Parthians or the Dacians. You are quite right about Pompey being slain by the Egyptians, though.

    I stand corrected.

I have found the video by accident so I can tell only what I know, that the Dacian empire was big as in that map image (something what is represented in EB 1 by uniting all the tribes becoming pavel ter - the perfect emperor) . Another thing what I know is that Rome indeed feared the dacians and the crossing of Danube(otherwise the roman emperor Trajan wouldn't had assembled all the legions from the empire in 104 AD for his hunger of gold and silver .

Anyway I was refering to the texts that I presentet to support the renaming of dacians land as Dacia.

"After this, Caesar will be emperor"

Come on, who made this vid? A twelve-year old nationalist kid?
