I have installed IBFD Ruina Romae recently. After installing and set-up I decided to go for a hard challenge. The Western Roman Empire H/H.
Wow! This really is hard.
Firstly. I like the campaign map. It's lovely with the soundmod.
I love the huge range of different units. it gives an accurate feel to the armies of this era. I found myself constructing very regimented armies when playing republican era mods. But with IBFD. My field armies are improvised together with whatever troops are available.
The skins look nice, although they could do with being perhaps less... bright? colourful?
The Western Roman Empire is very hard. After six turns I am 60,000 in debt. I did start disbanding some units, then decided I am going to need every man, as I am not going to be able to afford to train more.
Many of my cities are experiencing negative population growth, although I have managed to quell all the riots.
The goths sacked Rome, although they lost over 3,000 men in the process, and I have six gothic stacks wandering through central Italy. I have abandoned Spain to the vandals, and evacuated the better quality troops based there to Africa.
My only highpoint so far has been capturing Massilia? (called something else in this mod) from the usurper Constantine III.
I have made the Visigoths my first priority. I have formed one field army from the troops in northern Italy. Another field army from the troops around Masillia, while leaving a large garrison in this city. And two field armies from the troops in Illyria. One of these I have sent to Italy, while the other is staying put to guard against the threat from the Ostrogoths and Huns.
This gives me 3 field armies against the Visigoths six. At least the losses I am about to sustain should help the economy a bit.
Brigands seems to be a bit too common. I have lost many troops just dealing with these.
Any advice would be most welcome. especially tips to reduce my debt. I suppose sacking Gordon Brown would help.
