Silly question, probably, but when doing a custom map why can one only set weapons and armour to bronze level? Sometimes you can't even do that with some units.
Anyone know why this is...and how to avoid it?

Unlike rome, not all your units have upgrades ti'll gold.
As you probably have noticed with medieval, the armour/weapons of your units change when you upgrade it. Therefore the armor of early militia units that you use throughout the game can sometimes be upgraded to gold, while late units can most of the time only be upgraded to bronze because their 'not upgraded form' already wears late armor.

I'm pretty sure that there are no units that can be upgraded past bronze. Even peasants and Town Watch!
Do their weapons and armour chance appearance in custom battles...I haven't noticed if it has.

Byzantine spearmen and dismounted Byzantine lancers can. I think Sergeant spearmen can to. Being Greek, I pretty much stick to the Byzantines. sorry if I couldn't help moreOriginally Posted by Ashantai

Hmm... I wonder if any troop in the game has weapons above bronze... If not, why? Anyone could use better weapons. Take a look at the peasants, for example.
"Golly! I'll spend lots of florins, sharpening my peasants' pitchforks! That'll certainly improve their attack! I'm the smartest Lord ever! Sadly, for some reason, I have well over twenty thousand florins, yet I can't give my peasants anything better than pitchforks! And I can't tell them to go turn into town militia! This must be God's bidding!"
Well, that'd be funny too, to retrain a unit completely, turning spearmen into pikemen, for example, or peasant archers into... well, better trained archers...

the reason for the solely-bronze weapons upgrade is because of the swordsmith guild. only the first level will give an upgrade while the 2nd and 3rd levels expand the effect.
as for other units that upgrade past bronze armor, pike militia and halberd militia can go all the way to gold, and russian berdiches can go to silver
