Thread: Creating a World – Basic mapping from scratch

  1. #121

Default Re: Creating a World – Basic mapping from scratch

    ok it is in Third_Age/data/text/TSOTS_regions_and_settlement_names.txt

And yes i have renamed everything to TSOTS to make it easier, which means the folder, the file above, and the first line of descr_strat
The thing i find weird and mite be effecting things is that the Fellowship_Campaign doesnt have its own '_regions_and_settlement_names.txt' it must use the imperial one or something, and in case u dont have Thrid_Age the Fellowship_Campaign is another custom campaign but uses the same map as the imperial_campaign

EDIT: oh and the string.bin file did get created

I am not exactly sure how they did it, but the settlement names are the same anyhow, maybe the game used the imperial_campaign file as default.

In your case I honestly don't know what causes the error (maybe the txt file is corrupt and doesn't convert properly?). I have Third Age installed, so I would suggest you simply upload your TOTS folder (compressed) together with the settlement_name file of it. Once you have done that, sent me a PM with the link and I will have a look at it.

Hello Gigantus, thanks for the great tutorial! I started out by getting the contours of Iceland like in the tutorial, but got a bit frustrated everytime it had to be filled up for the regions and climates and so forth. So I created a simple round island with a mountain. When I got to the last part of the tutorial (the 'gloating over your work' part) I executed the bat-file and tried to start a campaign with england, but when I pressed 'Start Campaign' I was redirected to the single player menu. When I tried to load my map in geomod, it said: "Dimensions of the map are invalid. exiting now". After that I checked all the dimensions of all the map files, and as far as I can tell, they correspond to the dimensions given in your tutorial. So what's wrong? Could I have misplaced the cities (The dimensions of my island are the same as your Iceland map, so I don't really suspect any trouble there)?
edit: also, I was denied access to the cfg and bat files. I can"t remove the read only attribute. I managed to make the files in other directories, and hen copy them over to the mod folder and replace the existing files, but maybe something freaky is going on there as well?

Fun things to do in Total war:
    1. Trample peasants to death with elephants (optionally with culverins)
    2. Burn peasants with greek fire
    3. Bombard peasants with mangonels
    4. Burn peasants with fire-arrows

U need to have administrative rights to gain access to those files and u also need to turn off the UAC.

I have administrative rights. what's UAC?

To further clarify: I can remove the read only, but when I close the properties window, it reverts back to read only.

Disable the UAC, assuming Vista or Win 7, http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/w...trol-on-or-off, or http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/1...-in-windows-7/.
Total War games and UAC are not friends.

Thanks Irishron. Downloading TATW at the moment, so I can't reboot to see the changes, but I'll see if this has at least solved my read only problems.

Hey, I've tried going through this tutorial a couple of times. The first time around, things worked out perfectly, but I tried a new, more complex map this time, and unfortunately I'm having a problem.

Whenever I click to start a game with my new campaign, rather than loading the campaign, I instead get sent back to the previous menu, and can't click on Campaign button again unless I go elsewhere first.

Here's the end of my error log currently:

The error message will be above the [game.script.trigger] section.
Either search for [error] in your log or compress your log and attach it here (click the 'Go Advanced' button when composing your reply to access that option)

Sorry if this seems like a lot of errors, and I noticed one of the ones before my post had a similar issue to the first error of mine, but he never managed to figure out what was wrong, so I wasn't quite sure what direction I should be going to fix it.

Couldn't find region name 'Winchestershire_Province' in stringtable = you haven't got the necessary entry in data\text\imperial_campaign_settlement...txt

The music_types script parser has broken - unknown token 'england'= should have been: factions england

could not create settlement at script line 58. = probably a follow up error from the previous errors. Or the settlement is placed on water. Remember: in map_heights the RGB value of 0,0,0 is equal to water. Fix the first two and see if the error persists.

U can use any random color just make sure that the RGB value is unique.

Just add them to the Slave entry in the descr_strat.txt file and add a army in it as well for the rebels.

For the region.txt file along with the city name and what color the region is, there is also two other numbers what are these #'s for

Check this tut of mine (thanks for using this one): Creating a World – Adding detailed Regions
It explains the entries in descr_regions.

Alright, the first one I tried to fix, but it's still not working out properly. I have the entry in the appropriate document (Event tried renaming it three times to no avail.).

As for the sound file, I have "factions england france spain" yadda yadda, but it still doesn't work. I'm pretty sure I know what the problem was (Forgot the semi-colon to comment out the labels I was using), but now the game crashes with the classic "22:15:16.855 [system.rpt] [error] Uh oh. This isn't good. No idea why, but exiting now. Sorry pal." error.

I hate to ask, but would it be possible to get someone to look over my files and tell me what I'm doing wrong? (Attached)

    - the descr_regions_and_settlement_name_lookup.txt file is not needed anymore: delete it (unless you are playing RTW)
    - you didn't upload the data\text\imperial_campaign_regions_and_settlement_names.txt file (sorry, I didn't type out the name fully in my response) - that is where the first error is referred to.

Ahh, right, sorry again. Here you go.

I'm still not sure what the issue is with the sound document, though...
