Ok, odd problem, I use 7zip, and tried to download the tutorial, but opened it with Notepad, so now I get unicode instead of english. How do is fix this, or open this with a different program?

The tutorial is in DOCX (Office 2007) format and eleven pages long with a lot of formatting. This is the reason why I am not displaying it in my post.
This means Office Word 2007 or later or a word processor that can handle that format. Not sure about 'Open Office".

Open office also supports .docx format.

Hats off to you sir, a very clear and lucidly explained tutorial

I have a small question that needs answering......
I am currently working on a submod (A custom campaign), which includes making a new map, the problem is it is not a new map (?)

Following with your Worldwind tutorial, I am starting out, creating a world with creating the map heightmaps, regions and what not.

    The Problem:
I am trying to crop out a part of a map (by map, the heightmaps which is in the mod folder) that has already been made. So if we put in Vanilla terms, say cropping out France, and a some of the neighboring regions, apart from the entire map of Europe

It works when I implement this cropped out map and make a simple custom campaign with 2 factions for a simple test (following your tutorial), the problem is the total map size is exactly the same as the cropped out map size, since the scaling of the map, and the map dimensions can be as small as 220 x 180

Stupidly, I simply "increased the scale" of the map_heights and ground maps to the size of the campaign that I want which turned it into a very low resolution, and consequently the campaign did not work since the expansion created new buffer colors

    My Objective
In terms of Vanilla to explain things easier, say that, I am trying to play a custom campaign with the region of France using the original map files, but instead on a larger scaling.

    My Question
Is it possible to create the new resized map by rescaling the cropped region of an existing map, to the size that I want and sharpening it somehow so that it will still work

If there is a way to somehow sharpen the image then could you tel me how?
    Thank You

I can only talk about using the GIMP, but other editors will have a similar option when changing the size of a graphic (sharpening after the enlargement will not work):

When using the 'image\scale image' you get presented with a quality (interpolation) option. By default it is set to 'cubic' which will give you the results you described.
Simply change that option to 'none' and no new RGB values will be created (fuzziness around shapes)

I'm running into a problem when trying to view my map in-game.

When I open up the game and select Grand Campaign, I get the text window "Please select an item from the list".

    Any thoughts?

Seems your map is in the wrong folder or you haven't got a imperial_campaign folder.

Suggestion: download and install my "Bare Geomod". Copy your files from the data\world folders over the corresponding files in the Bare_Geomod folder.

Using Bare_Geomod gets the same result. I'm going to go through the whole tutorial again and come back here if I'm still having a problem. Thanks for the quick response.

Check the RGB value for the region and it's name in the imperial_campaign_regions_and_settlement_names.txt file.

It's the txt file, the entry is missing.

String = A following of letters to be displayed in a program
Stringtable = a 'list' of strings in a file

In this case the entry for the region = {One_Province}Whatever name you wrote here

You tried two different versions and both were incorrect.

Quote from my 'adding detailed regions' tutorial:

    data\text\imperial_campaign_regions_and_settlement_names.txt
Simple data base consisting of two (three with legion name) lines for each region:
    Code:
    {Island_of_Cyprus}Island of Cyprus
    {Nicosia}Nicosia
    {Gotland_Legion}Visby’s Finest
The first line is for the region name and the second line for the city name. The names in brackets have to agree with the entries in the descr_regions file. The second part of each line can be changed at any time.
Most of the tutorials in my signature are about mapping one way or the other. Looking through a few obvious titles will help you to understand the interaction of files. The present tutorial is about the graphics part of basic mapping.

I dont get it though i have done exactly what that tutorial says, i have read it and followed it and it doesnt work.

And y if u just follow the instructions you have in the Basic Mapping From Scratch u dont need this file?

Then another error will have taken its place.

    Error log again, please.

    Have you added rivers already?
What is the size (see descr_terrain) of your map?

It appears that either your settlement is in the wrong directory or the string.bin file didn't get generated.

    1. Delete the corresponding string.bin file
    2. start game and check if the string.bin file has been generated.
    3. state path (and name of file) to the directory where the settlement file is kept
