Well alternative fuel technology has been around for quite some time now. Solar, wind, Biofuel, etc. Brazil has embraced Boifuel technology and they are now free of foreign oil dependency. {Sugar Cane}
Development of these technologies is indeed staggering cost wise and will probably need government support to come on-line quicker.
There is definitely collusion among oil concerns to maintain inflated prices and downplay seeking alternative sources of secular energy.
