    Default Cannot Play RS

Finally able to get back into the game but, for some reason after launching RS I get to the screen where I choose to play a saved campaign or start a new one and then the message: "Rome Total War Has Stopped Working." I get this message when I choose my saved campaign or start a new one.

I was having no problem whatsoever for months but now I cannot get past this message.

I was playing 1.5a and I am now patched to 1.5c, however, this did not fix the problem. I received this error with 1.5a and again after patching to 1.5c.

I can still play RTW- I kept a clean copy- but cannot play RS.

I only saw one previous post on this issue and that was fixed with a computer reboot. No such luck for me, though.

    Try deleting the map.rwm file.

I presume you are using Vista? What have you done about User Access Control and where did you install your game to?

When you installed the patch did you install to the game folder and not the data folder?

Have a read of the two topics about Vista in the following thread: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=167821

    Thanks for your response Brusilov.

The game was properly installed and patched- I could not play before the 1.5c patch either.

I did not see your respone before I deleted my original 1.5a patched to 1.5c and reinstalled 1.5c on a fresh RTW copy. I can now play. (Very frustrating playing for awhile and then nothing.)

The only thing I can think that caused this was Vista placing my Preferences file in a different directory. I read different posts on this and found my Preferences file and changed Autosave to false. I orginally did this but apparently the change did not go through; therefore, I was playing for a while with Autosave set to true.

    Thanks again.

If you read the first Vista related post in the link I supplied it will explain where the preferences.txt file and any other file you change goes (saves, replays etc).

I did use this alternate location for a while (the virtualstore one) - even with UAC off files go there. However, I was forced to reinstall Vista as I'd messed up the registry. I took the opportunity to install the game to a folder outside of the "c:\program files (x86)". This allows the files to be saved as they were under Windows XP.

The only thing I can think, is you said 1.5a patched to 1.5c, if you didn't patch to 1.5b before running the 1.5c patch, I can pretty well guarantee that RS won't work. It sounds like the re-install was done with the full installer which of course would bypass the 1.5b patch as it's included.

    Thanks for the response.

I did patch to 1.5b before 1.5c. You are correct I used the full installer for 1.5c when I re-installed the game.

I lost a great campaign, but I can now play.

Instead of starting a new thread, I post my issue here....

I have a very old RS installation (0.8, then 0.9, then 1.0, hotfixes, 1.5, 1.5 hotfixes) but it has always worked fine. Now, since I hate installing and uninstalling RTW, I saved my game in my outer mobile hard disk. It was a perfectly working RS with BI. I used to play it by having it in the secondary partition of my notebook hard disk (I didn't install it, just copy\pasted it from my outer hard disk). To be precise, the target was D:\Roma Surrectum 1.5. I played it with BI, so the target line was -mod: -nm -show_err, and it worked.
Well, my pc crashed and I had to format it, but only the primary partition, not the one in which RS is. Now, when I try to run it with the same target in the link which I have on the desktop, it starts loading, all of a sudden it crashes saying "RTW has stopped working". Yes, I have Vista SP 1 with all updates...and UAC off...
