    Default Need help on displaying a custom event - historic or otherwise...?

    Hi there,

    I'm working through a custom mod for the Britannia campaign of Kingdoms but am at a loss as to what I am doing wrong when trying to trigger & display an event inclusive of pop-up message after the forced death of my factions heir...

    I'm using the following bit of script in campaign_script:

    ...in addition to this I have entered the following into historic_events (at the bottom):

    the debate to a close, as well as establish a trade lane that is most lucrative.

    {FAMILY_DEATH_BODY}A member of the royal bloodline has died.
    {FAMILY_DEATH_TITLE}Royal Lineage Death
    ...aswell as this description in descr_events, again at the very bottom of the file:

    I have also included a .tga file (family_death.tga) in the data\ui\northern_european\eventpics folder and subsequent folder for each of south_euro, east_euro cultures in both the mod folder and externally in the main parent M2TW folder. (I've stuck it in all the folders now to cover all the possible bases as it wasn't working when entered in northern_european )

    But it just isn't working, I get booted from the game with an error message of "unspecified error" and the system.log file says the same.

    I have been able to get it to work when using one of the existing default historic events (first_piano) but not any of my own creation.
    In the long run I'd like to have it involve a standard event (generic character_dies_natural event) as occurs for "non-console forced" deaths but thought I would attempt the easier historic event method first - but still managed to fail

    I've looked through numerous tutorials and other requests for help on the same and similar topics but nothing stands out on for what I am doing wrong... is it the fact this is a mod for kingdoms and not vanilla? I'm beginning to think that I am looking at it too hard and so might not being seeing the wood for the trees, so any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

    Is there a character named John de_Balliol existent on your campaign map in the second turn or in the date 253?

    userprobe - John de_Balliol exists from the start of the game as a named character and default heir to the scottish faction. I'm just using the 2nd turn for experimentation purposes with an aim to extending this to a later turn to allow his son to become heir (the famous John de Balliol) after he has come of age...

    I've included the date 253 for the historic event as I don't see the game ever getting that far, so it is really a value of little worth bar the fact that it is a requirement (so I've read) in historic event setup.

    Try the following things in this order:
    -deactivate all entrys in historic_events for event historic family_death and retry
    -rename character to a simple name (take care the name is unique and in the name list of that faction) and retry
    -remove the >"< (i dont know the word for those in english) and retry - example:
    console_command kill_character John
    -rename command without console_command, and retry - example:
    kill_character John

    Thanks for the reply userprobe, but I'm afraid I am still stumped...

    * deactivating (commenting out) all entrys of family_death that include a date (both in desc_events and in the script: date 0 0) allows the death to occur but no event message to appear
    * the character is unique (named as Johni de_Balliol, the only Johni defined in my names file)
    * I've attempted to use kill_character with and without console_command with no success, the only combination that I ahe got to work is that listed above
    * I've also tried using and not using the "" (quotation marks) to specify the character but again no success

    What I have listed above does work (the character dies and a pop-up displays), but only when I use an existing vanilla event (first_piano historic event), so I assum the character part is not where the problem lies - would this be right?

    Any other ideas? Is anyone else able to give this a look?

    I think message apear anyway when you delete only the part in desc_events. Because the message in historic_events is called from the entry in campaign_script (add_events / event historic family_death / end_add_events)


    ADDED: have you deleted the "historic_events.txt.strings.bin" after changing the "historic_events.txt"???

    I use a seperate installation for the unpacking of all vanilla and kingdom files, I then only copy over the files that I'm editing...

    ...in this instance I've unpacked the files on my D:\ drive, converted the .bin file to a .txt file on the D:/ drive and then just taken the .txt file over to the installation where the mod runs from (the G:/ drive), so there is no historic_events.txt.strings.bin file in my text folder

    so does that rule that out?

    ADDED: it seems the historic_events.txt file wasn't generating a bin file when the game was being run - I dragged over the generic version from my vanilla installation of kingdoms and set the .txt file to read-only. The .bin file now updates with a recent modified date and the event is generated as requested!!! (and thats with the inclusion of the date entries)

    if there is no historic_events.txt.strings.bin file in the data/text directory where you have changed the historic_events.txt, than you are not starting the game in the right mod folder
    ADDED:
    From which shortcut do you start your game? Is this shortcut going to your mod folder or to the vanilla game?

    Sorry, but i cant follow up what you have done with your installation!!!??? :hmmm:
