Default Enemy at the Gates: Pure Awful

So I saw in the listings that the movie Enemy at the Gates was on RTE2. I had heard of it before but I thought it was that movie about the American government's corruption starring Will Smith. Then I looked up info and saw it was about Stalingrad, and thought yay! A historical movie about one of my favourite battles.

So at 9:00 I sat down, even convinced my dad to let me watch it on the 40 inch. After only 25 minutes, I had turned it off, gave my dad back the TV and was playing EU3. Enemy at the Gates is ing awful! It very little to do with Stalingrad. It was just like Pearl Harbour, it was set in the same time and place that it suppoes to be based on but it completely missed the point. Instead of a movie about the battle you've a movie about a "famous" sniper in the city that probably didn't even exist. Pointless

The story was bad enough but the acting, oh dear God the acting. Apparently, every German and Russian had developed a British accent. FFS, it was like the actors were putting on British accents because everyone in the movie has one, from the sniper himself to the little child who found him in the loft. The worst part was that at times, it seemed like some actors were trying to put on a Russian accent and it just sounded like an awful mess.

What a terrible, terrible movie. Thoughts?

I once said that Enemy at the Gates was an entertaining piece of fiction. And I will stick with that.
"Romans not only easily conquered those who fought by cutting, but mocked them too. For the cut, even delivered with force, frequently does not kill, when the vital parts are protected by equipment and bone. On the contrary, a point brought to bear is fatal at two inches; for it is necessary that whatever vital parts it penetrates, it is immersed. Next, when a cut is delivered, the right arm and flank are exposed. However, the point is delivered with the cover of the body and wounds the enemy before he sees it."

I first saw that movie years ago... I was 10, I think. I actually liked it due to the whole "war" thing.

You mean the 1993 German movie? I heartily recommend it.

I watched Enemy at the Gates and it was awful.

I throw it in the same bucket as Pearl Harbor as well.

A few flashy scenes, misses the point, focuses on boring and non-historical elements...

This movie is like "Take a historical character, put in some history, then make him kill a lot of people, do a montage, and end it with a dramatic showdown"

The movie with Will Smith that he was thinking about is called Enemy of the State. I don't really understand what you're saying

I like Jude Law(looks kinda Russian) and Ed harris(looks kinda German) in this movie, but I really think Rachel Weisz is one ugly "one eyebrowed" actress.

    Digged the sniper-scenes also.

If you want an exact battle story-line Im afraid, you have to study film, become an director/producer, get money and make it yourself.

Vasily Zaytsev, not quite as handsome as Jude Law but certainly very real:

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
He killed 225 soldiers and officers of the Wehrmacht and other Axis armies, including 11 enemy snipers.[1] Prior to November 10, he had already killed 32 Axis soldiers with the standard-issue Mosin-Nagant rifle.[1] Between October 1942 and January 1943, Zaytsev had made 242 verified kills,[2] but the real number may be much higher;[3] some argue it might have been as many as 500.[4] His military rank at the time was Junior Lieutenant.

At least this is who the character is based on, I think they used his name.

Its kind of slow, but then again it really should be for how long that battle lasted. Its not as flashy or well produced as american movies but it gets its point across very well.

A classic. But if you're looking for an ADHD action flick, don't bother.
The common culture of a tribe is a sign of its inner cohesion. But tribes are vanishing from the modern world, as are all forms of traditional society. Customs, practices, festivals, rituals and beliefs have acquired a flut and half-hearted quality which reflects our nomadic and rootless existence, predicated as we are on the global air-waves.
