I can't get any. At least with infantry. My infantry will have a 3 to 1 kill ratio and might get a chevron if they are lucky but most often not. Any advice?

if they get lucky they might get some.
It does seem to take longer for some units, cavalry is very easy to max the chevrons out, just let them hunt down all fleeing enemies.
I think they need to kill a certain amount of units to earn a chevron, the fewer soldiers in the unit, the faster it goes.
i think it isnt due to the killing of a "unit" as i can get very experienced catapults and trebuchets by just getting them to kill a few soldiers in lots of units. It depends not only on the number of soldiers killed but also on the quality of the troops facing each other. if you spearmen kills a knight, he gets lots of exp, if youre knight kills a peasant, he wont get as much.
of course cavalry can rake up exp killing large numbers of archers or fleeing troops whereas youre soldiers will actually take many losses which when you replace will lose overall exp.
This is as in M2TW, the unit doesnt have experience, the actual soldiers do so if one guy single handedly kills 20 people he will have lots of experieence although the unit as a whole makes up the average.
im not sure on the exact figures, chances are all of these will affect but generally the more soldiers a unit kills, the more exp it will have.

I've noticed this too. It is difficult to get infantry to level up but cavalry and siege equipment go up like crazy.

Try to Flank and surround enemies infantry with the infantry you most want chevrons on this causes the enemies infantry to rout really fast and because they have nowhere to run but through your infantry they all get killed or captured.
Also try to recall infantry and re charge into lines as often as possible i noticed infantry dont really get any chevrons if they just stand and duke it out but when you charge and kill several infantry at once or route the enemy with infantry results are alot better.
I think the main reason infantry get less chevrons is mostly down to how people are using them which is 99% of the time a block of infantry they just leave on the front to duke and they dont really use them atall just use cavalry to flank round and do all the killing along with your archers.
A good tactic for getting loads of kills for infantry in field battles. Best used against rebels and smaller armies think of it as a training exercise for your infantry before the big battles.
Have your archers bunched up in the middle with infantry on each side an set back quite a bit. AI will always go for the Closest unit it can reach thus in this case your archers. The Archers then run down the center and AI follows at which point your left and right infantry flanks push inwards. You need to get the spacing and timing right or once the archers run they wont follow and attack one of the infantry flanks. Try get it so that once the archers start running there still the closest unit to attack this way the AI will chase the archers into the gaunlet.
You could siege a rebel province and wait for them to sally forth. When they start routing, park a cavalry or infantry unit at the castle or city gate and slaughter them as they retreat back inside.
There's no specific reason for infantry to get less chevrons, it is simply because they don't have the chance to get as many kills with as little friendly losses, as cavalry, missiles and artillery do. They gain chevrons eventually after a series a battles where they "add up" kills perhaps. In the rare cases where they can slaughter a boxed-in enemy, or a fresh, good stamina unit gets to chase a tired router, they can gain easy chevrons too.
I have a question: Do kills accumulate? I mean, suppose a unit gets X kills in a battle, a few less than those needed to gain a chevron. In the next battle it only needs to get those few kills, or does it have to start the count all over again?
i think they keep counting the number of kills of the surviving members. i seem to remember there beeing a big deal ages ago about how each soldier would have his own kills tallied.
