    Default A bit of fun?

Recently someone posted on here 'Would you vote for me?' and outlined their stances with regards to various issues etc - asking people if they would vote for this guy if they had the chance.

I was thinking - for a bit of fun would he call a 'mini mock election' ? We could select two TWCenter Forum Users who hold different overall views and then after say a week throw up a poll. The two users would be given a timeline of what days they will have to discuss what on. For example 'Monday: Economy - Tuesday: Law & Order' - something along those lines. This would allow them time to prepare what they want to say. Users could submit their questions to the candidates and the best questions would be asked.

At the end of the week we could all vote for the candidate we wanted to.

If anyone is interested let me know - I thought it'd be a bit of a laugh and quite interesting to see how 'normal' people conduct themselves in a mock election.

Might be interesting. But you should give people more than a day to respond. Some people have jobs and families

Make sure those who are "elected" are at the least capable of defending their positions. I hate one sided contests.

Pretty good and fun idea if you ask me. Id like to see how it turns out. Maybe get people who are interested in running write up some stuff like a campaign speech/open primary and we can all vote to narrow the list down to the two who get the most votes to run against each other?

Hmm, sounds interesting. Maybe we could make it like a bigger thing though, with pre elections and whatnot?

My fellow prisoners, as your nominee-elect, I will strive to push issues and legislate policies to make your lives fuller, richer, and happier. My fellow mudpitters: I have a dream. A vision. Before me, I see the most wonderous community of people anywhere on the internet, and together, we can make it better.

I will also strive to kick the living out of our rivals, those bastards down at the Political Academy.

Maybe the two selected could have a debate in Garb's FC? With special rules. A group of (say) three people are selected, each witha pre-written question, that hasnt been seen by teh candidates.

This question is then posed, and the two candidates must each post their view/policy on the matter in response to the question.

To make this more like a real world election, can we have Captain Arrrgh! as the crazy 3rd candidate?

Either way, I think Rush Limbaugh should definitely be one of the candidates.

I think this idea would be great. There could be 3-5 debates, each lasting a week or two, and then at the end there would be one big poll to elect the winner. The question is, how many candidates would there be? If there were only 2 some people may not agree with either although 5 would be too many. I think 3-4 would be best.

This could be fun. I think there should be as many candidates as there are people who are regular posters here and are willing to commit to taking part within reason. I don't anticipate there being that many if you have to produce six or seven decent length 'policy statements'. Also, would this be for an election in a specific country, or just in any nation state?

Agreed sounds like a good idea.

Basically I'd rather help *run* this thing than be a candidate. So anyone else who wants to help me run it let me know.

Ok agreed - we'll aim for say, 5?

Also, would this be for an election in a specific country, or just in any nation state?
I don't mind really It would be interesting to see how many people are from which country. If we have more from US it would make sense to say it's an election for the US, and obviously if we have more from the UK it'd make sense to say it's an election for the UK.

Let's say that anyone who wants to be considered for a place in the 'presidential race' must compile a 500 word + (too short? too long?) 'opening speech' as someone has already suggested - giving a brief outline of what they stand for and why they would 'make a difference.'

Maybe the two selected could have a debate in Garb's FC? With special rules. A group of (say) three people are selected, each witha pre-written question, that hasnt been seen by teh candidates.
That would be good. We'd get users to submit their own questions that were relevant to the topic - pick the best five and then spring them on the candidates

    Good point Bovril.

An American candidate's policies would be incomparable to someone from a totally contrasting country. Yet if we set it in one then the poster's from that nation will have a huge advantage...

Maybe set it in the Democratic Nation of Garbarsardar?

In agreement there. I dont have...rigorous enough views to stand up to some of the questioning that could happen

I'd be happy to lend a hand as well.

Thats about a page of typed A4 right? Sounds alright, maybe give or take 50 or so words? 100 word margin is fair enough imo.
