Thread: UK Government wants to ban more drivers.

Default UK Government wants to ban more drivers.

Novice drivers could face an automatic ban after a single speeding offence, and would have to retake their tests, under proposals for a tightening of road safety laws.

Thousands of more-experienced motorists could also face an automatic six-month disqualification after two offences .

Is this a tad too harsh?

for speeding? yes i think its to harsh. if they wanted to do this to people who have caused a wreck within a certain amount of time, that would be more acceptable.

ummm, I think the theory is that if drivers obeyed the speed limits there would be less accidents.

I'm curious whether there are any laws there regulating cell phone usage while driving? Or text messaging?

I hope they ban women from driving next time.

If there's one thing I can't stand it's young drivers racing around at 60 in a 30 zone just because they finally got their hands on a 1990 Golf GTI. The police should forget breathalyzers and conduct IQ tests, as Jeremy Clarkson alludes to-

'The speed we’re allowed to drive should be based on our IQ. This way, Stephen Fry would be allowed to travel at 160 while Kerry Katona would be limited to 2mph'

I couldn't disagree more. I hate being stuck behind slow s driving 10 miles under the ing speed limit that somehow always get in front of me and refuse to move over and let me safely pass them. Always on my way to work (which is late in the afternoon). Rarely ever do I get behind slow drivers at any other time.

A speeding maniac is easy to deal with on the other hand, just pull over on the shoulder and let them pass. Problem solved. Slow people are equally inconsiderate cause they hog the road for themselves and you are forced to deal with them until you or they leave the road.

Well the govt want to reduce road accidents and they're not going to do that by prosecuting people who drive too slow over people who drive too fast. Having said that, I drive about 450 miles for work (to scotland) and there are few things more fustrating than heavy goods vehicles travelling at 50mph on a 70mph stretch. However, it is simply a case of being patient and waiting for an overtaking area. It's a pity the police NEVER force these people to pull over for a mandatory break to let cars pass that have been stuck behind them for 45 minutes.

Me too, and IMO people who drive twice the speed limit should be banned from driving right away.

But the article was talking about speed violations of 15mph to 20mph.
I think going 75 where 60 is allowed can still be excused as a mistake, especially when everybody else drives 70 on that particular road.

There most definitley is. You're not allowed to use a phone while driving, therefore no texts either, people have hands frees and speaker phone now but I believe you get 3 points if you;re caught.

As long as people have their own cars they can move distances independent of government control. By controlling the vehicle (public transport) and the systems (roads, tolls, petrol, etc.) modern statist governments can thus control their citizenries. This is imho the whole agenda behind such moves that pass under the name of "safety" and "helping the environment" and other such pretexts.

and helping the environment is rubbish here in the UK where we produce a completely insignificant amount of carbon emissions (nothing that could change the world anyway).

but its cool how labour have jumped on the green bandwagon and put an extra tax (ontop of the dozen other ways to tax stuff) on stuff - they see it as a good way of getting more income, nothing more.

but then destroying the ability for all these people to drive is gonna seriously hurt their money making so wtf :/

It shouldn't make any difference when they passed their test.

Either people get banned for speeding or they don't. It's stupid to ban a guy whose only just passed his test for one speeding offence, but not a guy who passed two years ago - how is the one case 'more dangerous' than the other?

Far, Far too harsh. One offence should never be considered final for anything. The current 2-year-points probation system works fine.

good. You break the law, you get suitably punished. If you consistently break the law by carrying a knife, the courts can confiscate and destroy the knife. If you break the law using a car, its quite right that you should be prevented from using one. It prevents you from committing the offence again, since quite clearly you didn't learn from the first time.

People driving slowly is very bad driving as well. Its a minor error on your exam to "not make progress" which you can achieve by, for example, driving at 40 on a dual carriageway. Alas the police are only likely to intervene if someone is doing 10 on a motorway or something similar.

The usual culprits of this tend to be older drivers, so I think that there definately needs to be retesting at an earlier age to ensure old people are still confident drivers.

I suspect though that everyone's driving standards would improve if we all had to take the test every 10 years.

Other bad driving habits that really annoy me are people who can't manage basic lane control, people who don't know how to use basic lane control around a dual carriage roundabout and people who don't indicate.
