how do you become popular with the people?

Conquering is the best way to do it just keep taking places over and you'll steadily rise in popularity with the people and lower with the senate until the civil war begins. There are traits for generals and such but conquering is the best way. Having generals that win allot of battles raises your popularity a little with the people too. There are other traits like being a chariot fan or racer that governors get from there being a hippodrome or the like in the city

Basically just conquer a lot of territories... Once your at 40+ the Senate should be hating you with a passion, and the people will love you.

My Great Lord has been able to gain love from the Senate and the Plebians at the same time. Of course the Senate stopped loving my Lord after he declared war and captured Rome.
