Default Nobels peace prize for the European Union

Hi sorry if this has been disscussed elsewhere.

I read some time ago in aftenposten, a norwegian newspaper, that some parties in the norwegian parlament where afraid that the nobel peace prize would go to the european union. The parties who are afraid of this are naturaly big opponents of norway joining the EU.

Now I think that giving the Prize to the EU could be a good idea since they after all have created peace and stability in western europe.

But what do you guys think? Is this a good idea or are there more qualified institutions/people which deserve the prize? It would be interesting to hear your view.

If nobody responds to this at least I know that nobody outside norway gives a rats ass about the peace prize

Nobody inside Norway gives a rats ass about the peace prize either. What else can you expect with nominations like Hitler, Stalin, and Arafat? It's a joke basically, and completely run by leftists at the moment. The sad thing is that it gets more publicity than the other Nobel prizes (the ones that actually mean something). Also, the irony in Norway (Nato member) giving out a peace prize is hilarious.

Scrap it altogether, or let neutral Sweden hand it out.

It is too early to give the EU a peace prize. It is true that Western Europe has, for the most part, been at peace since WWII, but it could be argued that Western Europe was largely at peace between the Franco-Prussian war and WWI (unless I'm forgetting a war).

Just a small note the oter nobel prices are for sciences wich are naturally less political then peace.
That said i do not think a peace price shud go to big organizations.

The EU has created stability in western Europe? What a joke. Western europe (along with central, and northern europe) have been at peace since NATO was created following WW2.

The EU hasn't made the world more peaceful, they just built off an already existing peace. As soon as I see EU troops enforcing a ceasefire in Rwanda they can claim to be supporting peace.

    Exactly.
People should stop buying into this EU propaganda.

I would be very disappointed at the Norwegian Nobel prize committee if they gave a peace prize to the EU.

Or maybe the American government deserves one too, for keeping the peace between their 5-0 states.

    It's just silly.

Also: you forgot it's not legally possible to abolish the Nobel peace prize or even to give it to Sweden since that would go against Alfred Nobel's will.
All you can do is ignore it.

thats exactly wat i thought. the EU was primarily created as an economic union to help individual countries with poor economies. it has only been several years after its creation that it started turning into the super government that it is today.

So it should have gone for Soviet union for forcing western Europe to cooperate, thus creating peace and stability.

Nations are expected to work towords peace but we are often disappointed. Better to recognize the small and couragous. Certainly there is some individual or small ngo that has worked tirelessly for peace over the years and is deserving of recognition.

The only reason theyd pick the EU is because they want a useless winner rather then a controvorsial one. Its strange. One year they want a super-controvorsial canidate and the next theyre scared of it and pick something ridicolous like a branch of the UN.

Are there any memberstates in the EU which have been forced to join? I agree that there are bad things tied to joining EU, but dont the good things outweigh the bad things? Or am I just blinded by the mainstream media?

When has the Eu ever stopped a war or done anything deserving the prize? Correct me if I am wrong but weren't they solely economic until like 15 years ago? Not that it matters as it is terribly biased and doesn't mean anything but they should give the prize to people. They don't give science prizes' to pharmaceutical companies.

Of course good things outweight bad things. I am for EU.

I just kind of answered to Sidmen whose post seemed to promote NATO
