Default Heredity of the Family Tree

I am now trying to make an emulation of Yakaspat's Unified Rome mod that is compatible with RTW 1.5. Part of what I'm trying to do is create the illusion of there being several families in Rome.

I tried to do this by making the faction leader (Flavius) have no surname, while giving him four children with four different surnames (Julius, Brutus, Scipio, and Marius). The idea is that as each of the four children have children of their own and the family tree expands, their different surnames will be passed down, imitating four different families.

My problem is that when I enter the campaign, no characters have a surname at all, and none of the children of Flavius have wives or children, which they do in descr_strat. I've added the necessary surnames into descr_names.txt, so that's not the problem.

I have a suspicion that the starting faction leader's surname is hereditary and that he passes it down to his children, therefore Flavius, since he has no last name, makes all of his children have no last name. Does anyone know how to remove the heredity of surnames? As to the absence of spouses and children, I have no idea.

Sorry for the double post, but I've just made a breakthrough and it's too different from what I was asking before to make an edit.

I've successfully made surnames a hereditary trait to give to each of the four sons. I just tested the Julii trait, and the trait shows up in their details scroll, the description is correct, and everything works except for the fact that "Julius" (the epithet I coded) doesn't show up in their name.

This is the relevant code for export_VnVs:
    Code:
    ¬--------------------

    {Julii} House of the Julii

    {Julii_desc}
This man is a member of the patrician family, the House of the Julii.

    {Julii_effects_desc} +1 Influence

    {Julii_epithet_desc} Julius
    This is export_descr_VnVs_enums:
    Code:
    Julii
    Julii_desc
    Julii_effects_desc
    Julii_epithet_desc
    and this is export_descr_character_traits:
    Code:
    ;------------------------------------------
    Trait Julii
        Characters family

        Level Julii
            Description Julii_desc
            EffectsDescription Julii_effects_desc
            Epithet Julii_epithet_desc
            Threshold 1
    Code:
    ;------------------------------------------
    Trigger Julii_vnv_trigger
        WhenToTest CharacterComesOfAge

        Condition FatherTrait Julii >= 1

        Affects Julii 1 Chance 100
Does anyone see where I went wrong?

Also, answering either question works, or suggesting another way if you know how to get the same effect.

You can avoid this problem simply by giving the faction leader daughters, and setting the men as husbands of the women. This has been done in the XGM mod in order to simulate the different greek cities' rulers. I dont know much about modding however, and so I'm not sure how to set the husbands, but i hope this helps a bit.

Thanks, that sounds good. Does anyone know how to do this?

The best way to find out is to check out mods that do what you want to do. So download XGM and check out its Roman family tree.

Expand your borders, a mod based on XGM 5.

Take a look at this, it does exactly what you want to do:

Thanks, the guide was really helpful, and closer to what I was originally aiming for, but I think XGM has the better system and I'll try that first.

@CaesarVincens: I spoke too soon when I wrote that message. I've downloaded the mod and PMd one of the mod leaders, so I'm set.

    Thanks to everyone!
