crash when entering a battle

hi there,

ive got a major problem with my medieval II total war game.
i used to have the clouds across europe mod installed but ran into an error, in an attempt to fix this, i uninstalled everything and installed the vanilla version on its own with no mods or patches, i am still geting the same error, it only happens when i enter a battle, the rest of the game runs fine

the error message is:
Medieval 2: total war encountered an unspecified error and will not exit.

this is becoming rather annoying as i dnt know what else to try

any help would be greatly appreciated

Have you un-packed the game files? If you have you must do the following.

-  NOTE: Due to a timestamp check, the following unpacked files will
   cause the game to crash and must be deleted before the game is
   launched:

    data\descr_geography_new.txt
        data\descr_geography_new.db

Those files are found in the Medieval II Total War/data folder.

ive tried that, the files dnt exist, tried unpacking it with just the 1.2 patch and with CAE and they still wernt there, which both me and my friend who had the same problem and deleted those files though was very strange!!

Are you using Vista?

i am, but ive managed to play it on vista before,
then i downloaded the real combat patch and it all went to pot from there

have removed everything and tried again, but the problem has never gone away since

Because of the way some of these mods do things the only cure is is a complete uninstall of the game, reboot, and reinstall it. Don't mix mods unless you have assurances from the mod makers they are compatible and/or willing to take the time to make sure all the lines in all the files are correct.
