The fact the writer uses Harry Potter as a comparison after admitting they werent familiar with Martin's series makes me want to smack them. Really hope it works out though and it ends up as a series, Id love to see HBO treatment (which is usually good) of the genre especially after the train wreck Legend of Seeker is.
Just finished the third book, I can see this working as a HBO series. It's fantasy but not too fantastic, if you get my drift.
Some day I'll actually write all the reviews I keep promising...
I tried to read the series...it was horrible. I couldn't finish the first book...
I wonder why only the most obscene and perverted stuff is being looked at? Terry Goodkinds' stuff is being produced too, or so I've heard.

Obscene and perverted? Based on what that it doesnt have any cute hobbits or sock stealing elves or a boy attending a wizards school? It is a more adult, more complex series and its refreshing. Goodkind's writing while imo horrible is hardly perverted but no need to worry since the TV series has evidently decided the whole Ann Rynd of fantasy novels makes better television if its reduced to good vs evil.
No. Based on the fact that it's "obscene" and "perverted." Of course this is just my opinion. G.R.R. Martin's book read like...an expression of unnecessary brutality.
It just seemed he went out of his way to be as graphic and realistic as possible...
That's what the genre Drama is for. I'm sorry I'm not one of those people who demand my Fantasy be more realistic. It is a more adult, more complex series and its refreshing.
And it's definitely not "refreshing."...I don't read a Fantasy book hoping to read about real life problems. That's what newspapers are for.
Yeah ok, having a haven of S&M witches (or whatever they were...)...isn't at all perverted...Goodkind's writing while imo horrible is hardly perverted...do I have to mention that one of them wore a skin tight red leather outfit...yeah that's a common theme in Fantasy...Adult Fantasy...
The inclusion of that whole angle, IMO, was a way for the author to share some of his sexual fantasies...I'd prefer he not include it in a Heroic Fantasy story...
If he wanted to write porn he should've wrote a different book.
Well we got a different view on what is perverted. Goodkind has some issues with overuse of violence/sex but for someone who happily reads comics from people like Ennis its rather tameIt's just a different type of fantasy, instead of hobbits walking across the landscape to toss a ring into lava writers like Martin and Goodkind show a more realistic, dark or gritty world. I like it, no good guy always wins, no hero gets the girl in the end..it breaks the stereotype of fantasy which has been deeply rooted in "once upon a time" and "happily ever after".
George R. R. Martin has created a lush fresh and complex world that is primarily character driven. Although there is some unknown evil lurking in the shadows, all of the events are driven by the choices and ambitions of the characters we meet in the books. It breaks from the traditional quest type fantasy stories we are familiar with from writers such as; Tolkien, Eddings, Goodkind, Salvatore, Jordan, to name a few.
If HBO approaches it anything like they did the ROME, Deadwood, and Band of Brothers series, it will be a success.
As for Goodkind's series. I can't watch it. I've read all the books and understand why the writers and producers made the choices the they made in creating the television series. However, I believe they sucked all the life out of it and made it into cotton candy.
I'm curious where the writer got their information from, because the HBO deal we reported over a year ago in the Hollywood reporter and from what I understand the Pilot was killed or stalled during the writers strike. I hope its back on the table.
Unfortunately, I don't believe we'll see any progress on this until the actors union issues are settled and the looming cloud of an actors strike is out of the sky.
Under the Patronage of Lord Condormanius
GRRM presents a fantasy world with some believable politics for a change, grey characters instead of good guys vs bad guys and modest magic instead of wizards throwing fireballs.
Sex exists but hell, it exists in real life too. There are what, 4-5 sex scenes in thousands of pages? Neither perverted or obscene....
He really did compare it with harry potter didn't he, what a morron I really hate it when journalists are to lazy to do at least a little research before they write anything. He could have walked to a bookstore and spend 10 dollars on a really good book for a change.
But I'm really happy about it and I completely agree with George RR Martin that the series are impossible to make into movies but a tv serie could really work out well.
By the way, I heard somewhere that universal is putting 150 milion in a film of the wheel of time of robert jordan. Not even close as interesting as a song of ice and fire off course but it could be ok.
And if you think a song of ice and fire is obscene I guess you shouldn't turn on you're tv because if you thing asoiaf is bad you'll have a heart attack from the average commercial break. For the people who can put things in perspective I reccomend reading Steven Eriksons books about the Malazan empire I think it's maybe even better the asoiaf and unlike mister Martin does steven erikson manage to bring a book out more then once every 5 years.

Hey I like Wheel of time but Ive been planing to read song of ice and fire, read that martin was inspired by the war of the roses which has got me interested, Love the war of the roses with all their backstabbing and court intrigue now that would make a great TV series.
for those who really don't like goodkind (like myself) http://asoiaf.westeros.org/index.php?showtopic=4588

Don't finish the book.
The next 3 is going to be nothing more that a disappointing lull in the series. Then the next 5 is going to be nothing other than thousands of people you can't remember the names of sipping tea, talking about dresses, and tugging on their hair.
The Wheel of Time series is undoubtedly one of the most inefficient usages of the English language conceivable by man. I suggest you dump that garbage before it sucks up your time and money (like it did with me) and get Song of Ice and Fire, a story that actually has... characters and a plot.

I say continue reading, Kiljan. I thought book four, five and six were some of the best in the series.
Any thread about ASOIAF and WOT always involves one or the other getting thrashed. Seems like something is better if you can put it above something else. Personally, I like both series, for different reasons.
As for the TV show, I really hope they don't mess it up.
Screenshots Competition! Win a Copy of Half-Life 2!
Vassal of gigagaia, Brother Knight to Professor420 & Jones King
Why not? ASOIAF can blend magic, mythical creatures etc with intrigue and political conspiracies and that's what makes it great imo...that's what I'm saying! If you want realpolitik read nonfiction, Grisham, true crime or Harry Turtledove.
Why're you looking for that stuff in the genre "Fantasy" which is defined by archetypes, magic and mythical creatures?
