Royal Navy shoots dead two Pirates

Sailors from HMS Cumberland (The Fighting Sausage), part of ITF-158 operating in the Gulf of Aden, have shot dead two pirates from a Yemeni registered dhow that was tracked by Russian and British warships from the task force, having chased the dhow away from a Danish cargo vessel it was attempting to capture.

When attempts to force the Dhow to stop failed, HMS Cumberland deployed Sea Boats and encircled the vessel. Pirates fired the first shots at the British sailors who returned fired and killed 2 without taking casualties before boarding and capturing the dhow. An MoD spokesman confirmed a third man, a Yemeni national later died of injuries, though it was unclear if those were sustained in the firefight with the Royal Navy or in earlier incidents with the task force and cargo vessel.

Russian Naval spokesmen confirmed the frigate Neustrashimy was the Russian vessel involved


Piracy is a real threat in these waters, a threat to the shipping of all nations and anyone who says we don't need a navy anymore should recognise the work our sailors do protecting shipping around the world. The next freighter ITF-158 rescues might well be flying a British flag or carrying British goods.

The US deals with cargo ships traveling the pirate infested waters between Asia and Australia all the time. Quite a load of them to. And they're hard to track because many are fishermen most of the time, on occasion they raid ships for some extra money.

Seriously good job though. You can never kill enough pirates. Especially these modern ones that just go about killing everyone.

I don't have a problem with it. It's quite appropriate that people who would commit acts of terror against others while armed are met by bigger, smarter, meaner and better armed opponents once in a while. Let's see how these pirates like it.....oh wait....they're dead. A hazard of their chosen occupation, I guess.
