Books that leak manliness

Thread: Books that leak manliness

    Default Books that leak manliness

In here, we list the books and authors that are the complete opposite of the likes of Nicholas Sparks and that "Twilight" crap, and which sappy things like romance, daily drama, and cutsey lessons take the backseat to men beating the ever loving crap out of each other nonstop beginning from page 1.

In short, these are the books you want to read when trying to pick a fight.

In the Graphic Novel department, for example, we'd be looking at Frank Miller and Garth Ennis.

    But back to printed fiction.

Pressfield's Gates of Fire (and pretty much anything by Pressfield) is just sheer manliness.

Patrick O'brian's Aubrey series, about a bunch of men on a boat blowing the crap out of other people on boats, is pretty much straddling the border of homoeroticism.

David Gemmel put the Epic in Epic Fantasy. His Legend, and especially the Jon Shannow books, is basically just violence and slaughter wrapped in more
    violence.

Glen Cook's Black Company is also pretty manly, although his less known Dread Empire series takes the cake for sheer visciousness.

Then, there's the ever expanding genre of military porn, or milporn, for short, which includes David Drake, Eric Flint, and the rest, where the entire book focuses entirely on the military aspects of things devoid of any drama or personality.

    You know. Manly stuff.

I say Heinlein's STARSHIP TROOPERS, or Henri Charriere's PAPILLON. Charriere was probably a murderer, who knows? Whatever he was...he was a MAN despite his faults! Possibly the best book I've ever read.

I have always wanted to read The Alphabet of Manliness.

I think it would have been funnier if his B was Beef Jerky and his J was Jerky, Beef.

In my childhood I quite enjoyed reading the Tarzan series by E.R. Burroughs, and always fantasized to become Tarzan one day.

My favourite one was Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle, a pure essence of male superiority.

The thing about books being "manly", as you put it, is that none of them are actually very good. They tend to be written clearly for their intended market, which is teenage boys, with a mediocre vocabulary and an undeveloped appreciation of skilful writing.

So "manly" isn't really the right word. "Boyly" is more correct.

Stop trying to be deep. Being shallow is fun.

Drink a beer, have rough sex, and contemplate sticking an ax in somebody.

    Then we'll talk.
