    Icon1 RTW influence on education.

Hi, I'm Seir I've lurked here occasionally when looking for TW info, but first time posting.

I'm writing my final paper in Eng 101 on revival of the classics in education, and I'm using a variety of resources.

One of my arguments has to do with the influence of media, but more specifically video games on peoples educational choices.

So I'm asking the RTW community if your a student or someone who works in education (any country the decline and resuscitation appears global) have you personally experienced or seen if RTW (actually thinking about it any games in general) has influenced your educational choices? (such as classes you take, your major etc.)

Sorry i would have liked a poll in addition to specific comments but i can't seem to find a polling option so i'll need to count the answers manually.

I'll be recording the comments into an appendix for my paper: If you for some reason would not like me to quote your comments in my appendices and paper please inform me in the post.

Thanks to anyone who takes the time to participate and respond; I appreciate it.

I don't know if this really helps, but for me it was kind of the opposite: learning about the Greeks and Romans in World History I my freshman year of high school (as well as taking Latin) is what influenced me to play Rome: Total War.

Then again, games like Call of Duty (the entire series) influenced me to take part in the Military History club at school, and take a bigger interest in the topic of World War II in general, so I'd have to say yes, in that aspect, videogames certainly influenced my education (still don't know what I'll major in in college though, just a sophomore)

    yeah that does count actually.

One of the components of my argument is modern media's effect on education helping to bring back a love of classical antiquity, so if modern media increases interest in other fields of education therefore it ultimatley has a good chance of increase interest in the classics.

Although not specifically related to video games in general you could mention the films 300, Alexander, and Gladiator. I mean half the time you mention anything related to antiquity after that was released that's what a lot of people first think of.

Yeah that's the 2nd part of my media section is holly wood with the third being tv.

lol I think most people think of antiques when you say antiquity anymore

I wouldn't say that RTW has been the only thing that has influenced me to take specific classes, but it definitely has increased by interest in the era, and made learning about it a lot more interesting. Our latin teacher once used RTW to do a demonstration of the tactics of particular battles. It's been quite useful and fun to learn with.
Whether it was the sole factor or not that's still influence

P.S. You can't make a poll yet because you need a total of 50 posts to do that.
Yeah i figured it was something like that

RTW (and the other TW games) taught me more about how battles are really fought. Total War demonstrates all the planning and strategy involved that you don't see in the movies. 300 is a good example, the Spartans stayed in the phalanx formation for about five minutes before turning the battle into an all out brawl. If the Greeks did that in real life the Persians would have destoyed them.

True man its seems in the movies its just two huhe groups of soilders crashing into each other with no actual battle planning taking place.

Well for one thing, RTW is the reason I take Latin. It is also the reason I am failing Latin because I frequently call Scipio the Younger one of Hannibal's Generals in front of my teacher.

Yes playing Rome Total war has influenced me spending time surfing the internet for historical information relating to the ancient civilizations seen in RTW. I found my information through Wikipedia and television shows from the History channel about ancient history on Youtube. I have also been drawn to Cinematic movies from the era such as 300 and later in history by the Kingdom of Heaven.

I have even been tempted to buy a DVD about the rise and fall of the Roman Empire.

As far as wanting to take history lessons I would say no, but it has definitely convince me to learn more about ancient times.

don't know what to say since I'm by natural a fan of history. but this game can make me search about various heroes this age like Caesar.
But if you like it, never say no to your hobby.

Playing the TW games did spark an interest in military history.

However 300 was a bit of fun and Alexander was a pile of pooh with the greatest general of his time buttsecksing all of Darius' retinue and had about as much historical content as a lemon.

    Moving on...

Who can forget the opening scenes in Enemy At The Gates and Saving Private Ryan? Another inspiration for looking into history was the Band Of Brothers mini-series. These things make history look cool and so motivate people to learn about the past.

Playing RTW, and EB in particular, really helped me personally get an interest in this time period. I'd always had an interest, but RTW gave me an excuse to research it, and get into it more.

Well, Rome sort of helped in the road to a military history major. I'd always wanted to be a history professor of some sort, Rome sort of made the final push.
I thought about writing something clever, but then I remembered I'm not clever enough.

R: TW made me compelled to read histories of the classical world so I could find out about the historical accuracy (or occasional lack thereof) in the game

My Great Lord Feloric uses the Rome: Total War video game to learn about human battle tactics. The information is vital to my Lord, for he is planning to use these tactics to claim Earth as his own.

I have always been interested in Roma History since I was young, and I became more interested when I had watched the movie Gladiator. And TW then taught me how the battles were fought in ancient world.
