How do you combat the Mongols?

i've tried many things so can anyone help?? im russia and im in the way of the mongols and western europe but how do i combat them??? ive already lost bulgar and sarkel and moscow is next. i have every availible solider in moscow but i fear their trebutches will make a mockery of my stone wall so what can i do!!!!!!!!

Lol... don't be so desperate, Be sure that you have good spearmensand alot of your best archers try to keep your walss the longest possible

To Counter the Mongols is easy, Outnumber them with heavily armored horse archers, works a treat against everything as there like tanks.

Should some fast moving light armored horse meet them, they'll get ass kicked in melee, and the archers dont take much cavalry from enemy archers due to there armor.

Plan long term. Sure in the short term you are losing regions, but use this time to develop a huge force awaiting there arrival further forward (and I mean huge - several stacks if possible)

Well.... i have a force of 1000 men near Ryzan(or somethin like that) to keep the mongols from getting near moscow in the long term. i have Ryzan and i feed more troops out everyday but would kazaks be any good against mongol archer cav.?

OK. Bad news. ryazan has fallen. moscow is next i need a solid plan now or the money im getting of western europe for attacking the mongols will disappear!!!

consider sending priests to the regions that are controlled by mongols, the difference in religion might cause the settlements to rebel and either become rebels or return into your empire. either way it cost them money and troops. spies helps with that too. also, hit them with cheap throw away armies to soften them up. Send in a stack of spearmen and charge them killing everything you can. sure you'll lose but if you take out a coupl ehundred troops, then thats a couple hundred less than you had and spearmen are cheap, once they retreat just retrain and do it again.

Yh me to Timurids only defeated me once and thats when i did a really stupid move of sending my men across the river and they just used rockets against me all destroyed...

yeah i agree with above post, when i was france and tring to get horsebreeders guild i had a nearly full stack of knights. they where draining my money quite a bit... but instead of disbanding them i disided to make use of them and make an all out charge. i think i killed 1500ish mongol... then got severly beaten then charged agian.

and if you have a general that can fight at night that helps as only some of the stacks can join the battle.

Start spamming Dvor cavalry. Create stacks consisting of 15 to 16 Dvor and some really heavy cavalry like body guards or Tsar guards. Attack with three or four stacks and let the computer control the reinforcements. If your computer can handle it you will have massive battles of six, seven or eight stacks on your screen. When the battle starts let your allies do the job and have your soldiers as back up. Use your heavy cavalry to kill the Mongol generals. They are your prime target. Once the Mongol general is dead use your heavies to charge the Mongol infantry. Your HA's should have dealt with the Mongol HA's by now.

It will take some training but once you have mastered the way of the steppe (massive HA armies) the Mongols will be a nice addition to your challenges but no longer a nightmare.

Now i need help.Poland are attacking from the west and the mongols are attacking from the east. i have taken your advice by making huge stacks of russia's finest but the polish heavy cav. will rip us apart. what should i do to stop this double sided destruction?!?!?!?!

I suggest you play a lot of custom battles as Russia against the Mongols. You should never lose to them if you have a 1000 man army. Find out what works for you and then use it, for each situation be it siege defense, attacking, or field battles. As for Poland, get a Diplomat and buy a ceasefire, then give them money each turn if you don't think you can stop them from breaking the ceasefire. Or just kill them, which is what I prefer to do.

Some basic Mongol strategies: Force them to attack you in the woods, and use spearmen to destroy their cavalry; Force them to attack you across a bridge; Force them to attack you while your army is up on a hill; Get cannon or ballista towers in all your cities, which will annihilate them as they siege you; Create huge stacks of spearmen and archers, park them at the top of a hill or in a fortress blocking their path, and let the Mongols attack them (they will).

Assassinate their awesome generals. That is very helpful.

As was posted above, get their cities to rebel by putting a bunch of spies in the city and a bunch of priests near it.

Any of the above tactics will help against Poland as well, if you decide you don't want to get a ceasefire with them.

one of the most successful strategies i have employed is making a full stack of archers, fully armored pref, they are basicly no more than a throwaway to completely weaken a major mongol stack, but they do have the capacity to come out on top with moderate losses.
20 units of archers, maybe 19 and a general so they last longer, guarantees heavy casualties even to the faster cavalry, just dont be afraid of friendly fire because your guys are probably already dead;
they just dont know it yet

I have noticed they usually attack the town of Antioc and then start expanding from there, so what i do is simply let it stay a rebel settlement or even better give a rival faction even better the papal states control of it and make my base and heavily defended stronghold of Edessa take the brunt of the damage from the mongol charge.

That is a chicken way to do it but I must agree and I have stated this alot of time in the multiple Threads on "how to beat the Mongols" that they are always targetting Antioch

easy answer The Mongols are Scripted to attack their and when the Player is around it's even more evident that they will go for Antioch.

I've played alot of campaigns and I must say that I've seen the Mongols only twice going towards Russia. I've played atleast 200 campaigns so go figure
