Default NYT article on a US Army unit in Afghanistan.

    Excerpt:

Once a hunting lodge for Mohammad Zahir Shah, Afghanistan’s last king, the castle is home for a year for an American cavalry troop, an Afghan infantry company, a Navy corpsman and two American marines. In the deadly contest for Afghanistan’s borderlands, it plays what might seem a singularly unattractive role. The position lies exposed near the bottom of a natural amphitheater deep within territory out of government control.

Insurgents hide in caves surrounding it and in villages nearby, operating unhindered almost to the castle’s concertina wire and lobbing mortar shells toward it at will. The steep slopes facing the walls are littered with shattered boulders and trees blown to splinters by the artillery and airstrikes with which the soldiers have fought back.

I suggest you give it a read.

Sounds like they are in a tight spot there.
Quite lucky that they only had one wounded and no KIA.

Well I have to give the NYT some credit... an article on American soldiers that didnt include the words rape, murder, violent, intolernce, occupiers, hated , and Bush... man the the Chief editor must have been taking a crap when this one got through....

But on another (far more inmprtant note) this is why I have the upmost respect for our Armed Forces.... they do more in one day for this country then I will prob do in my enitre life....

They risk their lives so I can sit on my arse and write on an internet forum.... regardless of what you think of the Republicans, Bush and the Wars.... if you have anything but reverence for the men and women who put on a uniform....we have nothing to talk about...

Just think, back in 2003 people were saying that war was going to be a push-button and all about missiles and aircraft. They believe ground combat was losing its importance.

As they say, warfare will always come down to the private and his rifle.

So why does the NY Times continue to publish details of secret memoranda involving terrorists? I do not mean why are they allowed to, but what reasons are there for the publication of this stuff. They did it with money transfers and killed the program. They did it with the transfer of suspects and killed the program. Never once has the NYT claimed that these were wrong, that the USA should change, and that the publication will hopefully accomplish the goal.

They simply must have another agenda. What is it?

Hopes for the glory days of bringing down another president?

    Competition to publish first?

    Or ...?
