    Default Your way of battling

    hey guys I don't know if this thread has been made or not but I think I'll just build one. Post your ways of battle here ( With pictures if you can/want ) All tactics can be except the pathetic noobbox and cornering Spartans. Can also use with mods. And remember this not the POST THE BATTLE FORMATIONS THREAD!!!

    To start, here is mine :
    I tend to use a mixture of phalanx and aggresive melee units. A la Thrace. (refer to RS' Cimmerian Bosporan for example since I'm using them.)
    Starting I tend to keep the rest of the enemy busy with my phalanx. Then circling with my first wave of falxmen. If succeeded. I'll use the rest of my bastarnae to completely surround the main enemy battle line. Keep cavalry as reserves to protect prized archers that fires the enemy from flanks. And if going accordingly, the fighting keeps going on till finish. I'll post some pictures if I have time.

    I have done mine, Now Where's Yours?

    In case of multiplayer, I play mostly skirmish with 8 cavalry unit, 8 missle units and some infantry infront of missle units.

    At the begining, If I have Horse Archers, I send them to shoot the enemy archers and put them in cantabrian circle. while HA's shooting I advance with may all army and start to shoot enemy missle units with my foot missles.

    After this point, it depends on enemy's move, if opposing player dont move then I shoot enemy missles and try to win missle war. If player quickly advances toward your missiles with his cavalry, I move my cavalry to protect my archers. Since, with this tactic, I usually have more cavalry then the opponet, it is easy to defeat outnumbered enemy (Well, not always).

    If you win cavalry war, then you can easily defeat remaining infantry. It is nice tactic but needs to be practised. BTW, I play at 15k with cwb rules.

    Ummmmmm, when I was able to logon, I used a variety of factions, but I would say the best faction for MP would be Seleucids, and my way of battling with them is to use elephant units right up front (unless the other faction has tons of phalanx units or javelins/missile units) smash my way in, and if the elephants go amok, let em run through the enemy lines for a while, then kill them as soon as they get too close to my lines. (2 units)

    Follow up with silver shield legionaries, or defend my position with silver shield pikemen, and crush the opposition with the seleucids' wide variety of units. (mixed variety of 10 units)

    Companions and catas are the best choice for cav, as Companions are faster and can take on AP cavalry, while catas crush pretty much everything else. (2 units each)

    and the rest are javelin cavalry/archers, to try and slug it out with enemy missile troops.(4 units)

    This is at a 20-25k denarii limit. (Mind you, this IS an expensive bunch of units here.)

    i have 2 lines. the second longer than the first. my first line engages the enemy. the wings of my second line flanks and the body of the second line is used as reserve units where they prevent the line from breaking.

    I usually circle the enemy army with two units of cavalry and have them kill the enemy general and then I go on a all out assault. they break like twigs!

    I prefer a tight formation as follows:
    A=archers, S=spearmen, HA=horse archers, C=heavy cavalry, G=general

    HA HA C S S S S C HA HA
    …………..S G S
    …………....AA
    ……………AA
    ……………AA
    ……………..C

    There is actually little separation between the front row and the reserve cavalry in the rear, for a very tight formation that can pivot quickly on interior lines. I don’t play MP, but the AI usually has a very long line that is too thin to stop this.

    In the offense, I move up to within archer range and pummel the AI center. As in chess, domination of the center of the battlefield offers the most advantages to an attacker or a defender. When I close to melee, the AI units show a message that reads “Dismayed at enemy numbers”, due to the double line of spears. My General also adds to the AI dismay and boosts my troop’s morale, as the AI center quickly crumbles.
    The HA harass any attempt to flank me with the outstretched wings of the AI’s army. I can shatter the center before the flanking units can get into position, which will demoralize them. Then any would-be flankers get shot by my archers and hit by the reserve cavalry. If they turn perpendicular to my flank, they will expose their own flank to my HA. As Alexander showed at Gaugamela, a short double line can beat a long unwieldy line.

    In defense, the same applies. Usually, the AI center routs before they reach my double line, and the infamous charge of the AI general cannot break through my center.
    I do use pause, because there is a lot going on and timing is critical.

    Agent Miles, I hadnt thought to play with a line that deep before, I'll have to try it when I get home.

    I like to play a lot of calvalry giving me a highly mobile and fast to react force.

    LI LI HI HI HI HI C C C C C C C C C C C C
    A G A

    A = Archer
    LI = Light Infantry
    HI = Heavy Infantry
    C = Calvalry
    G = General

    Usually I stretch my infantry out as thin as possible and line them up toe to toe with the enemies line, using the archers as harassment and the LI to delay flanking manuvers to the week side (oppisite of C)

    The enemy will usually send some units to try and tie up my calvalry, most the times it is their own calvalry. In response my infantry will charge straight ahead into the enemy formation.

    My calvalry then goes into a full charge I send a few C to tie up the enemies trying counter to my flanking manuver and bypass the rest of them to hit the enemies main line from behind which is busy kicking the crap out of my infantry. The enemy line usually breaks apart instants after the calvalry hits. The key is to be fast with the calvalry or the small number of infantry will be quickly overwhelmed your calvalry will end up in a prolonged battle with infantry they may or may not win and whatever units of calvalry you used as a distraction will get decimated.

    Sometimes the enemy will try and turn their main force towards my calvalry the key here is hit them with everything you have before they can get formed up, use a few horse to engage from the front and try and flank with the others. Basically you are offering up some units to delay tie the enmey up while you get a massive amount of mounted units at there rear. If your fast you the calvalry will save them from heavy losses. Its a risky way of playing and you either lose hardly any units and completely wipe the enemy off the map or your own army gets decimated.

    I tend to fight defensively, so I can adjust to the enemy's moves. Depending on which civilization I play, I usually use the classic defensive set of tactics (pelting the enemy with missile units, harrassing them with by putting my cavalry in menacing postions) generally to get them pissed off. Then, they usually charge furiously into my line, often breaking themselves against my still-fresh, still-unscathed units. In a perfect situation, this exact scenario will play out, and I will pursue them to death, cutting them down mercillessly. Of course, there rarely is a perfect situation in battle, so intelligent embellishment to this line of thinking is necessary, but this is usually how I fight.
