    Default The Republican Party...DOOMED????

So, I was just discussing this process in the Presidential Election Thread, and I figured it was worth it's own thread.

Some have come to the opinion that if the Republican Party does not change it's ways it is doomed to collapse.

Do you think this is so? Why?

I do not beleive this is the case...i
I beleive that the Republican party perhaps deserved to lose, after they mismanaged their power over the last 8 years. They did a less than stellar job, and have given the Democrats an excellent boogeyman in George Bush to blame the nations problems on. Perhaps he was to blame....sometimes he was. Sometimes he wasn't. However, I beleive that the Republican Party can and will bounce back within 4-8 years.

I don't beleive Barack can sustain the "star power" that helped him win this election. He got people out there, he had the "it" factor...but the "it factor" makes not a good president. No matter what he does, he is going to alienate his supporters. Perhaps he won't live up to his promises. Perhaps he will, and it will be detrimental to the American Tax Payer. One thing is for certain...he will make mistakes.

Another telling fact is that nearly 49,000,000 American Citizens voted for John McCain. Perhaps it was a blowout as far as the Electoral College goes but that is still a close race, considering Obama got somewhere around 52,000,000 votes. (from what I just saw) 3 million Americans more. This is not what you'd expect to see if this was the destruction of the GOP.

In my opinion, Obama better get ready for another fight, one where he is not at an advantage as the "reformer"...but that's just me. 2012. We'll see.

The Democrats barely lost by a very, very close margin in 2000 and 2004. The Republicans just got completely annihilated.

The only time a political party had lost support (Whigs) was when they were replaced by a new party (Republican). There is no party replacing the Republicans. The Democratic party will not "fit" everyone, so people will continue to vote Republican, if for no other reason then the lack of a realistic other alternative.

There's also the Federalists. Technically speaking, there are a lot more if you count minor political parties that failed to gain anything more than a handful of votes.

Back on topic... I highly doubt the Republicans are 'doomed'. It's just not realistic to say that after only one lost election.

True, and after 4 or 8-years of the Dems and Obama people may or may not be dissapointed and/or broke or whatever. politics and politicians, always be wary and they can make you weary and leary.

4 years to distance themselves from the Bush era seems the best thing for the Republican Party.

And hopefully a push towards a return to the party that it is suppose to be instead of what it has become.

Yes but would that still gain votes? How much people in modern America really want an old school republican party instead of the neocons?

Nope just natural progression, every party seems to go thru it when old ideas need to be looked at and the message presented to people as to why they should vote for them needs to be looked at.

No, we aren't doomed and we aren't out of the picture. A few stones have been knocked down, but we are stronger and determined.

Yes. They are doomed. They will never recover. They will probably collapse and start eating each other. And if you believe that, I have some property in Texas to sell you. A republican family just "conveniently vacated" at the conclusion of the current election.

Really though, nothing is doomed, the two party system exists for a reason.

he cant live up to all his promises its simple math. republican party is far from doomed. it was a tough loss but not surprising. the george w factor and all. the republican party needs to rethink there tactics and there approach. perhaps a strong conservative candidate and strive for a conservative majority again which america hasn't had in awhile. the republican party isnt doomed anymore then the dems were in the last 8 years as you can see there back in power. we havent had this much of a liberal majority since what the 30's. well they did have more seats then but you get my point.

Certainly not. I still believe McCain was a good choice for them. Though his selection of VP was less then desirable to most voters.

I believe that the Republicans need to change their tactics and approach if they are to win in 2012 (in case Obama screws up) or 2016 (in case he doesn't).

I have a feeling. 70% of 18-29 voted Obama, if he stays President ad does good, a new generation of Obamanites will emerge, if he stays 8 years...It could see the Democrats taking over for some time.

As does the Captain. If things improve, or are even stable under Obama, we could see him for 8 years.
