Default Defending can be too easy..

Right so I'm playing as the Greeks, taking over Roman settlements when a full stack of Julii come to take Capua. It was the easiest battle considering I only had a few units of Hoplites and archers.
Anyway the battle starts and I realise a Roman spy has busted open my gates, so instead of trying to hold the gates I position every unit in the centre of the city. Hoplites blocking off the front and side roads with archers behind them. Seriously the easiest win ever, they just couldn't break through.

Has anyone else been doing this? And would there be a way to counter it?

Get attacked by a faction with lots of quick missile troops like the HA from the Steppes. Infantry in infantry you are pretty much guarenteed the victory unless you have poor hoplites against maybe princeps or equivilent on the harder difficulties.

yeah i have pulled off that tactic before, well i guess the only way to counter it is when they use brute force and well trained soldiers against you, also if you are using armored hoplites to defend, then your homefree basically well it works for me lol i know how to use it but not really counter besides forcing hoplies to use swords i guess with mass charges?.

Oh god... It isnt hard to defend when your Greeks attacking is alot more harder. I positioned Hoplites behind the gates and on the walls.

If my gate was to go then I had 2 sets of Hoplites covering it. If they came onto the walls I had Hoplites. I made them have to run into my spears. And we all know you cant run into Hoplites. Ive stopped full stacks plenty of times. It is too easy, but if you want a challenge throw it on VH/VH and sometimes youll get 3x Full stacks thats more fun

greeks have a strong claim to heroic victories when defending but when attacking theyre just rubbish.

it's easy as long they don't make more than 3 battering rams...

Its easy if they make 9... that being as they all come to the same gate.

Because of the long spears and the bottlenecked gate its near impossible to get through as long as your using something more than regular hoplites.

The walls too are easy to defend.

The only time I've ever seen them all come to the same gate is if you have stone walls that preclude the rams from damaging the walls directly. And in those situations, I've never seen the AI build more than 2 or 3.

I've seen the AI build 9 battering rams before, against wooden walls, and they certainly don't all come to the same gate. I've been overwhelmed by Barbarians many times simply because I didn't have enough units to plug all the holes.

I'd have to agree with htismaqe here. All the AI has to do is have multiple rams (for wooden walls) or ladder/siege towers (for stone walls+) all at different areas of the city, and they might have a chance.

Hurray for Rhodians, Spartans, and Cretans!

One of the most fun victories I ever had. They kept moving troops in a line towards the wall as the unlimited ammo of the towers shot them. As it was an untimed battle, eventually there was only a cavalry unit left - i charged that and won! 2 bribed generals against a full scipii army! Killing 500/600 men (ish) without doing anything is great!

If u r defending in a seige battle it is always way too easy. Just plop all of your troops onto the town center and flank the enemy as they charge. Its even easy if u r barbarians because their towns always have small town centers so u dont have to be worried about being overwhelmed.

its not the defending that is hard becuase usually it is the defenders that have the advantage over the attackers. the already poor ai is disadvantaged even more in sieges where you defend. thankfully the game consists mostly of assaulting in sieges or starving them out which is actually not very fun at all.
