Default Is it still worth it to buy Rome: Total War?

I understand it's now dirt cheap, but I already bought Medieval II Gold edition, so is it still worth it to buy Rome or would it be a bad buy?

If you don't have it, then definitely go for it. Playing ROME will open up new avenues for you and it will allow you to download superb ROME mods such as RTR and RS. So yes, go and get it.

Definitely. An excellent game, with good graphics, even for now, with a huge modding library, which improve the game, add content, take it to different timeframes, there is pretty much everything. You will also find it in a cheap price now, after 4 years, so it is a must buy if you are a total war fan.

I agree 110%, its really a must-have and if you are a serious gamer even little bit then you must have this game on your shelf and on your hard-drive.

You guys are quite convincing. Just a few more questions. So what are RTR and RS? Is the vanilla game by itself still great?
RTR is Rome Total Realism and it is the mod for RTW.
RS is Roma Surrectum and it is also mod for RTW.

Believe me, these two are one of the best mods in the business and you will not regret it by installing them. Thats why you should definitely get RTW.

If you like playing online, then you'll find that Rome's Multiplayer community outnumbers Medieval 2's by more than 50 times. That's not even an exaggeration.

Vanilla's okay, but what makes RTW really great is the huge mod base... Get out there and try some, vanilla pales in comparison to most mods...

I'd definitely buy it, though if you've gone through Med2 you might find it hard to go back to the poor RTW battle AI and the subpar graphics.

But what puts RTW on a higher plane than Med2 is the mod selection. Between RS, EB, and RTR, and a of other mods being made, RomeTW will outlast Med2 by far.

I agree, the mod base for ROME is just huge. And now, RS 2.0 is coming out. Its going to be freaking awesome.

    I didn't like Medievals.

I say buy RTW and mod it. Then try another mod. Then another..

Rome kicks medieval 2 to the curb completely in my opinion. Buy it.

M2TW = better graphics and better (more reasonable) campaign AI.

RTW = slightly better gameplay and variety and balance of units. Factions are more differentiated from each other in the types of units they can deploy, and subsequently their strategy and tactics differ.

So, yes, RTW is worth the buy, even if you are not considering mods. Now, if you are considering the mods, then the picture gets even better for RTW.

Couldn't have said it better, I do prefer the AI of Medieval over Rome but Rome is Rome you can never leave

M2tws AI barely works so I'm not sure how you can think that.

I'm still playing vanilla Rome Total War today, actually (aside from my own skin pack)! So, it is definately worth it. I think RTW is the only game I've ever consistently played for four years (besides maybe SimCity4). And yes, there are plenty of mods for RTW, but, be warned, most of them are still barely out of beta status and despite the best intentions of some of the best modders around, I still find most of the mods to be very unstable (which is why I play a reskinned vanilla installation).
