That expansion was made kind of "late" and they didn't wanna focus on all the detail like they did in RTW and RTW:BI so they focused on fighting aspect of it instead. I agree, the first thing you notice is the weird map that doesn't make any sense, but Alexander Campaign was made to be just one campaign and thats it.

The map is weird-looking indeed, and since it was only one campaign, as Noble Lord said, CA could have made a good map.

Anyway, I would not consider "Alexander", a complete official expansion. Just think of it as a mini add-on. The battle mechanics and the large battles you will experience compensate for the badly designed campaign map in my opinion.

Its actually worth it just to use the smarter ALX.exe with mods, in my opinion. AI behaves much better.

Thats right, their main and only focus was on the battles and large number of troops and thats it.

The whole point of Alexander was to let you point a Macedonian army and Asia and shout "CONQUER!" Thats why so little detail is included, and Greece is ment to merely be a staging point for the invasion of Persia.

What's wrong with Greece? (haven't played it)

I was disgusted by Alexander Total War. I understand that CA sometimes (ok, always) compromise on accuracy in order to broaden the game's appeal, but this was just ludicrous. Not only is the map needlessly and grotesquely malformed (if individual modders can adapt the Vanilla map to extend accurately to India, then CA with its team of professionals certainly can!), but they got even the most basic details wrong. For example, if you fight the campaign of historical battles, the introductory video with Brian Blessed's voice-over claims that the Battle of Salamis of 479 took place in Cyprus and that Plataea was fought in the middle of the Aegean Sea. I mean seriously, how lazy do CA have to be? It only takes a couple of minutes to look at a historical map!

I thought that BI was annoying. Alexander was sickening.

    i ttoally agree with ya

CA's concept of the game was great but everything else was bad in comparison

yeah i wish they payed more attension to details (like greek factions) and didnt make it a rush campaign, i know its more accurate on Alexanders life span that way but i like to sit back abit and spend abit of time on it.

The whole point of Alexander is that a greek army tries to conquer the known east. And the unknown east. It is meant t obe a rush campaign, and the accuracy of the map is not important! It is for RTW and BI, as you are raising an empire, but in Alexander you are trying to conquer everything!

yes i know that but stiil i prefer a campaign where i can see my empire build and become stronger etc rather than just attacking everything and hoping for the best lol

The problem with that, is that Alexander may turn into a vanilla campaign but set further east and earlier. Alexander was radically different this way, as was BI. CA were aiming for a new style of gameplay, and that they achieved.

Love it or hate it Alexander is the core for many popular mods. The .exe adds many interesting things that modders can use. As for the campaign I agree that CA should have put a little more effort into it but then again they were busy on MTW2 so I think were lucky that the game saw the light of day.
