Portugal owned my family tree...
So I'm playing a game as Kiev, and all is going well. I get some very charming princesses, and send them off in search of suitors. They jouney awhile, creating some alliances along the way, and one of them eventually marries a nice Portuguese chap named Gustavo. Gustavo makes quite a name for himself conquering Barcelona on the way home and defending it against hordes of Spaniards, and I eventually start thinking he's a more deserving heir than my current slothful heir.
But here's the problem - my first king had two sons and a daughter. His oldest son became king; the daughter was disgraced, the second son died young in battle, and he adopted a third son. When he died, his eldest son had four daughters, none married (a couple not of age yet), so his adopted son became heir.
Now since my new King had no sons, when he died, the first king's adopted son became King and his eldest son became heir. Then that king died, and his other son became heir. That heir died in battle, and new heir came from the other line - the line with four daughters of true royal blood. This was Gustavo the Portuguese chap. It looked like all was set to go back this side of the tree when the last of the adopted son's heirs died.
But unfortunately, when my king died and Gustavo became King, my family tree died along with him. Most oddly, I get only the two founders of the Portguese dynasty (the two who died before 1080 AD) in my family tree. None one alive in the past 50 years (it's 1130) is there. I have a high suspicion that this has something to do with the marriage across family lines - but it seemed to be working when Gustavo was still heir. The other monkey wrench is that the new heir is Gustavo's brother-in-law Heinreich I Wolthus, a German bloke who married one of Gustavo's wife's sisters. Thus I may end up with the Holy Roman Empire's family tree beginning in twenty years or so.
So is there any way to restore my family tree? I was rather enjoying the royal family's evolution. I read somewhere that it's a nasty bug, but somewhere else that it may reappear at some point - anyone have any experience with this? Is there a way to fix this in the Medieval Shell or through editing the save file (if that's even possible for M2TW?)? I do have old saves from whence I could try to avoid having Gustavo or Heinrich (or the Egyptian lad who's also been married in on the other side) from becoming King, but I'd really like it if such a worthy general could become King.
The attached file is from the first turn where Gustavo is King and my family tree has been pwned by Portugal.
Nice default title, by the way - Peasant! I've been quite a fan of my peasants in my Iberian campaign of late - they've been showing the Spanish knights who's boss!

Yes, I too have had this problem many times. I ended up just putting useless people I did not want in my family line onto boats and sinking them!!! Oh the horror! It was the only way I could actually control my family line and not have dolts take over. I did this with Spain, I did not have to do this with Milan, their line stayed perfect.
I would really like to see a council of nobles quest come up when the King dies, which allows the player to chose the fraction leaders and heirs. That would be very cool and appropriate, since it is MY faction! There would also be an auto button that does it for the player if they do not care too.

Weeding was a passion amongst the Royals.
I will work on that script.
