Default U.S. border police arrest Mexican troops

    Reuters

U.S. border police arrested seven Mexican soldiers after they accidentally strayed over the international boundary into Arizona, authorities said.
The U.S. Border Patrol said agents encountered the troops in a Humvee a short distance north of the border near Yuma, in far west Arizona, early on Friday.
"The Border Patrol agents on scene established a dialogue with the subjects, who identified themselves as members of the Mexican military," the Border Patrol said in a news release.
"The ... agents informed them of their presence within the United States. Upon notification, the subjects were peaceably taken into custody," it added.
The soldiers, who were assigned to the 23rd Regiment Motorized Cavalry of the Mexican Army, said they had become disoriented while on patrol and had accidentally crossed the international boundary, the Border Patrol said.
After relieving them of their arms, agents took the soldiers to the San Luis, Arizona, port of entry where they were processed and repatriated to Mexico, along with their weapons and vehicle.
The incursion was the second by Mexican troops in recent months.
In August, a group of four Mexican soldiers briefly held a U.S. Border Patrol agent at gunpoint in a remote stretch of the Arizona desert after they mistakenly strayed north across the border.

So early recon by the Mexican military for a possible invasion on election day or simple accidents by illinformed and untrained mexican soldiers who must of forgotten their GPS and radio in their humvee.

Or could these soldiers be working for Drug cartels seeking weak points in the border to smuggle drugs?

I think they could be working for the drug cartels. Or just trying to find weak spots so Mexicans can cross more easily. or they just had too much tequila.

Or perhaps they forgot that we took Arizona back in the 19th century.

Can the mexican army afford to give GPS to every single unit? Probably just an accident, I doubt there's a big red line that shows the border

Yeah prob is, and I wouldnt have posted this was it not for the first incident early in which 4 mexicans held a border patrol agent at gunpoint. Usually Sargents drive humvees and they usually have a good idea on where the border is.

Truth be told, it's not like it's difficult to get lost in the Arizona desert... You have to bear in mind that incidents like this happen all the time.

Earlier this year, the USS George Washington accidentally entered Brazilian territorial waters for a brief period of time. Nothing that a brief diplomatic fax saying "I'm sorry for the inconvenience" did not solve.

Easier to drift into territorial waters then across a border and unforgiving desert into the land of another country. But honesty its prob nothing.

It was probably an accident, it's pretty easy to get lost in the desert and as someone already mentioned, we don't have the Total War luxury of a giant red line between borders.

However, since it's the second time this has happened in a short period of time, foul play isn't that far-fetched. Combine the facts that Mexican soldiers probably aren't paid very much and the cartels have infiltrated much higher positions of government, it wouldn't be too unrealistic to imagine the cartels paying off soldiers to smuggle drugs or scout possible routes for drug smuggling knowing full well that their status as soldiers means they will be treated with greater hospitality than a simple border jumper. The cartels can afford to buy whole sections of government, a few soldiers would be nothing for their coffers.

One of the biggest problems with leadership is that sometimes people mistake strength of force as good leadership, when it in reality shows the opposite.

Exactly. Haven't you heard the racist joke about Mexican intelligence?
