What are the best ways of easily gaining experience for your troops? I know there are a few temples that will give you a 1 chevron bonus, but how do you guys raise armies of silver chevron units?

Although this may disappoint some people, I am indeed alive, I just went inactive for three years.
The Gauls have a 3-Chevron (or 4 or 5 ...) Temple, and the Germans have a ... 2 I think. Aside from that, try to get as many kills for individual units as possible, and before retraining, consider using the highest-XP group to top off the less experienced (for example, if you have 3 Equites, two at 1 XP and one at 3, and all are missing 6 guys, merge the 3 XP guys into the 1 XP units, then retrain the 3 XP one. You'll raise the average XP of the lower units while keeping the high XP of the third one.).
War.
Lots of war.
And experienced general given the right selection of troops, and constantly retraining them, will eventually give you an experienced army which you can give under the command of another greater general once the previous one dies. This way, you have a Royal Army, second to none, even against much more qualified units trained later in the game.
Make a good army, give it to your best General, and go for a war against the weakest faction. Look for outnumbered battles and Heroic Victories. Make the world tremble and obey at the voice of your marching steps!

However its almost impossible to get high leveled armies. Cause you have to take them back to a settlement to have them retrained... if your conquering with a prize army then it slows down your conquering so high cheved armies are only really usefull in defence. Its nice to see their stats increase on their unit info list though. I had Eastern Archers with missile rating of 11... think they had silver chevs.

I find that auto resolving battles boosts experience alot. Also, try not to retrain units in cities, instead, combine veteran units into one, that way they will retain chevrons.
Actually, I find retraining you lose next to no experience, far more if you merge. In fact, you lose so little experience from retraining that some players (mostly EB players) consider it a player exploit and for the sake of realism only merge units, no retraining.
It may slow down your conquering progress for sure, but as I said before, If you create an army of avarage units early in the game, when they're experienced, they'll be even better than their non-experienced next level versions. Therefore you can retrain them in every Large Settlement along your path, which is not too hard to find compared to finding a Huge city.
Depends I destroy all buildings and exterminate the population whenever I take a new city. Guess next time I'll have to retrain first.
