By "gun culture" I'm not specifically talking about 'gun ownership.' I'm talking about the mentality that thinks it's ok to give an eight year old child an uzi...regardless of the reason.

no i think another thread about this isnt necessary. guns are too much fun to forbid them in america anyways. every 8 year old should have the right and means to blow its guts out. freedom isnt free and stuff..

This was definitely a terrible accident and 1 town over from me.
The kid definitely should probably not been using it or at least he should have had someone holding his shoulder while he fired.

Terrible accident pretty much sums it up. But i have to wonder what kind of certified instructor would believe an 8 year old kid could control the recoil of an Uzi on full automatic?
Preventable? Your signature pretty much sums it up morteduzionism. Don't give guns to kids.

That certified instructor should've been helping the kid hold the gun, especially if it was on full auto. UZIs shoot real fast, so they can surprise someone who's never shot one before, even if he has shot other full auto weapons.

I don't really know much about firearm laws in America but I'm guessing this is legal. I find this astonishing . How can an eight year kid control such a device and what were his parents thinking ?

That's what the early assessments are. The laws cover "ownership" not "pulling the trigger."
That's why law enforcement is looking to see if this could be a case of child neglect or endangerment...
Ummm...ok...if you don't think that allowing an eight-year-old to shoot an uzi isn't related to the mentality of certain gun owners...ok...uhh...yeah...well...ok...err...right...Very poor judgment on the part of the adults there, very poor.. Says absolutely nothing about guns, gun culture, or gun control

If I was responsible for any child's death (indirectly or not ) I'm not sure I would go home. Maybe only one place I could go..

Exactly right. As a firearms instructor myself I absolutely cannot believe this story.

That's it -- this so off the wall anecdotal. I still can't believe that they would let a small kid try squeeze off a round in an Uzi and a 9mm round at that -- it's just crazy. It would be like if someone let their 8 year old drive a race car. You wouldn't demand that we ban cars, would you?

Never give a kid a loaded gun - especially if it's automatic.
The first thing to teach a kid about gun ownership is not how to shoot it - but how it works and why it's such a dangerous liability and awesome privledge.
I'm a firm believer that before you should pull the trigger on any gun, you should be able to field strip it, put it back to together, and fully understand how it works and why it works.

The biggest problem about making fun of people who are into gun culture is that they probably have a gun - and you don't.
