Can't advance beyond first turn

Hello there,

I just installed a Gold Edition of Rome: Total War and started the Imperial Campaign with Julii, but after completing my actions for the very first turn and pressing the End Turn button, it just goes to Brutii's turn and then stays there and does nothing further I don't have any idea what keywords to type in the search box to find out about this problem either...

This is annoying, I just began the game

Does it freeze and you have to kill the game or does it do a CTD (crash to desktop)?

I'd suggest as a start by making sure you add the '-show_err' switch to the end of your shortcut target. If the game CTDs it may return an error that will mean something. Not all CTDs have a message though - it's usually file missinge messages.

Can you fight any custom battles? Try just a couple of units to see what happens.

No it doesn't actually freeze, and it doesn't CTD. It just stops dead at the next faction's turn and doesn't proceed. My mouse pointer still moves around. I can press Esc and the menu comes up normally. I can quit to the menu, do whatever, but when I reload the save it still doesn't want to proceed any further.

However, it seems I can temporarily solve the problem by quitting and restarting the game. Then it will proceed when I load the save again... it's strange. But once in a while it's happening again and I have to quit and restart the game... argh!

It may be that the AI is getting stuck somewhere.

One way to find out what is happening is;

1) Edit preferences.txt
change SKIP_AI_MOVEMENT to FOLLOW_AI_MOVEMENT (this can be done in-game as well)
change TOGGLE_FOW:ON to TOGGLE_FOW:OFF (this can be done in-game as well)
change LABEL_CHARACTERS:FALSE to LABEL_CHARACTERS:TRUE
2) Load the game
3) Press END TURN and watch the action

If a character gets stuck it may be possible to move or kill that character using the cheat commands (I've never managed to get the kill character cheat to work using a UK keyboard).
