    Default fighting on bridges

I have noticed that whenever I fight on a bridge when your enemies rout they run into the middle of your units and die. I was wondering if anyone else has had an experiance similar to mine.

    Yes. Often.

Sometimes enemy units will rout back the way they came. OFTEN, though, they will rout to your side of the bridge.

I usually set up cav wide on my flanks to ensure they don't make it.

Yep its funny i remember making a custom battle on moon river with like 2000+ eastern infantry vs some elite infantry on my side whatever it was and I killed just a few and they all routed as one into my units and died just a solid carpet of corpses lol.

IDK, they all die befe they all rout. I use archers and phalax on bridge battles. They are halved by missle before charging an by the time they run the last die by spear!

Ok good so my game was not glitching. But it would still seem that they wouldn't all go at once.

    Well,

I did a battle at the moon river map online.
I maded a V formation at the bridge..

Then at my left side you could cross the river so I crossed the river with my cavelry and attacked into my opponents back army.
    They all routed

They ran into my V - formation and the other way into the forest.
So ít's not a glitch I think they make their own descision for routing.
But I think they where not abble to rout the other way because it was blocked with his other units.
So they ran into ur inits ( which is verry unrealistic o.0 )

hmm... well I saw that they all just routed by rushing forward. I got every single unit on the bridge to do so, that could inturn have caused it because the AI had no where to tell the routers to go but forward possibly. but this I severly doubt.

I slaughtered 4000 Gauls on a bridge one time because they routed into my Roman ranks, while my 90 horse general pushed through the fray to behind their lines. Utterly annihilation, not one man escaped. It was a carpet of corpses.

Phalanxes are best for bridge fighting. However, dense, stout infantry is the key thing - not cavalry! EG, these Principes. Once these have nailed their infantry, cross with cavalry and chase down the routers - that's as simple as I can make it.

I haven't actually got any pictures of me fighting close up on any bridges, but I do have this ominous stream of enemy bodies drifting sloooowly downstream...

Yes, my friend, everyone who has ever played an RTS game for an extended period has had a similar experience. I do love bridges though; bridges and hills. It is pleasant to watch your enemy charge up a hill or across a bridge just so u can receive them with open arms in which to annihilate them. I have the funnest time creating battles in which I defend a bridge with a single phalanx against thousands of doomed attackers.... good times.
