Default Where does Taliban come from?

Isn't the name Taliban an incorrect translation of Arabic?

Talib is the Arabic word for male student, however since the plural of Talib takes a broken plural form, the translation goes Tollaab not Taliban. So why are they called Talban (which would be correct in Talib's plural was a normal plural).

Maybe one of them didn't go to school and mispernounced the word.

In the Pashto language, the way you make plurals is different from how you do it in Farsi or Arabic.

For example, this is how you do it in Pashto (in most cases):

    Alu (one potato)
    Alugan (many potatoes)

"gan" or "an" is added to make a word plural.

The Farsi word for "many students" would be Talib-Ilm and the Arabic would be Talba.

So the Pashto plural for "Talib" (student) would be "Taliban".

Ok, its Pashto not Arabic, I thought it was Arabic due to how Talib is an Arabic word.

Pashto is closer to Persian and Turkish than it is to Arabic. However, most of the languages from Morocco to Indonesia share the same Arabic and Persian nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, etc. This is because of initially the influence of and the need to study the Quran and secondly from invading Turkish and Persian armies (that ruled India, Afghanistan and Central Asia for hundreds of years).

-sigh- I wish people knew what they were talking about.

The United States funded the mujahideen during the 1980's. The Taliban has its beginnings in the following of Mullah Omar in the early 90's. The Taliban were funded by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and wealthy Arab sympathizers. Just because the Taliban have members that were part of the mujahideen that fought the Soviets doesn't mean that the USA funded, created, and/or trained them.

I could go a bit more in-depth but this isn't really what the topic was about in the first place.
