Default Can someone please explain experience, weapon, and armor upgrades?

How do each of these attributes actually work? What does experience do?

And I'm playing as england in an early campaign, I can get armor upgrades, but I can't upgrade weapons. How do I accomplish this?

Also, how come when I build a blacksmith, and I retrain some mailed knights in that castle, they don't get any armor upgrade? Does it mean that they already have that level of armor, and need a higher level in order to make a difference?

    Someone please enlighten me. Thanks!

hi Ardeshir, I'm fairly new to MTW2 as well, but here is what I figured so far about armor upgrades. Armorer/blacksmiths do
only upgrade the armor itsef, no weapon damage. Each level of armorer grands one more armor upgrade, dpending on what the unit already wears and if it can upgrade that high. Example. The leather tanner upgrades your lowest tier units, like levy spearmen/militia units that wear nothing but cloth. They will get the first upgrade: padded. For sergant spearmen to get upgraded, the first leather tanner doesn't help you, you need to advance your leather tanner to a blacksmith, and so on. Usually there is somewhere in the unit description, I think at the bottom, where it tells you what the next upgrade for that unit will be. The cool thing about MTW2 is that you can actually see the armor upgrades in the battle view. Have a look at your unit befor an after it was upgraded. It actually wears the new armor. Edit: you will as well have differnt colored shiels on your unit card, telling you what armor upgrade level the unit has. Bronce shield=first upgrade, silver=second upgrade, gold=third. I have never gotten any higher than three upgrades for a unit.
As far as I know, there is no weapon upgrade possible. Maybe only through experience (identified as shevron(s) on the unit card), as this will usually grand you several bonuses on the unit stats. But I'm not sure which ones, as I have not really followed each units stats before and after it gained experience. I just noticed that some stats were higher on those with experience than those without.

weapon upgrades come fromthe swordsmith building that can be built in castles.

And weapon upgrades are disabled in SS6.1 and are replaced with experience bonus to troops trained, and there is no way to get them at all.

If you want your mailed knights to get an upgrade, you ahve to build the level that can produce the upgrade: mailed knights upgrade from light mail to heavy mail. Heavy mail is offered by the 3rd tier of the blacksmith building.

Experience adds morale bonus (per exp point) and every 3 experience points 1 point of attack and 1 point of defense skill is increased. Maximum experience is 9 points.

In RR only 1 point of attack every 3 experience points.

    So many conflicting responses!

Okay, so only experience adds attack/weapon increases. Does the increase in experience also change the appearance of the weapons on the units? Because I know it does when I make a custom game and add attack value.

That's a Kingdoms 'feature', not RR.

I'm pretty sure experience gave at least 1 defense bonus.

no, you're confused about "attack value" and "weapon upgrade".
Weapon upgrade looks likea bronze sword on a unit card. It seems like adding +1 attack value but it actually adds 6. It changes the weapon skin. This is NOT available on SS6.1 - you can't get it except via custom battle or cheat.

"Attack value" is the attack value of a certain unit that can be modified by a) experience or b) weapon upgrade. Since weapon upgrade is unavailable in SS6.1 the only way you can increase your "attack value" is via "Experience".

Why was weapon upgrade disabled in SS? This is kind of a bummer... I liked seeing different weapons on different upgrades. I don't see why that should be taken out..

Because it made things severely imbalanced.

Yes, unit stats in SS have been fine tuned a certain way to promote it's own individual style of battles. so you can see how even a couple points can throw things off some. At least that's the way I interpret it, am I wrong?

Yep, you are right. Even 2 points makes a difference. A +6 boost from weapon upgrades is like turning a knife into a 2H sword, well almost.

Or a 2h sword into a machine gun!
